Vedenar is the capital city of Jah Keved on Roshar.[1]

Geography and Layout

Vedenar lies on the southern edge of Jah Keved, at the cliffs facing Tarat Sea. The sound of the waves crashing against the stone can be heard across the entire city.[2] To the west of Vedenar flows an unnamed river stemming from the Horneater Peaks.[3] To the north lay the vast fields that feed its populace.[2] Vedenar's ancient center is laid out in a hexagonal pattern with its main thoroughfares forming a rotationally symmetrical pattern that was likely created through cymatics.[1][4] It's likely, however, that the city has grown beyond that since the Heraldic Epochs.

Vedenar is known for its lush atmosphere and many amazing gardens. Most of the city is overgrown with greenery, with rare plants jumbled together wherever there's any space for them to grow. The most magnificent gardens sit atop vast, plate-like terraces that jut out above the city.[2]

Unfortunately, following the Jah Keved civil war, swathes of the city have been reduced to rubble and ash.[5] Many buildings have been reduced to heaps of rubble by siege equipment, while others have burned down to cinders. Many of the terrace gardens have also been destroyed.[2] The destruction is uneaven -- many Veden live in houses that remain well-preserved even as their neighbors have been razed to the ground. Even months after the war's conclusion, the smell of smoke still lingers in the air.[6]

Notable Locations

The Oathgate
The ancient Valhav Oathgate is located in Vedenar. Prior to the True Desolation, the dais housed one of the city's gardens, but the vegetation has been cleared away once the Oathgate was reactivated. There are two paths atop the gate, a long ramp and a set of stairs.[2]
The Royal Palace
The Royal Palace had once been the seat of the royal power in Jah Keved. It was utterly destroyed during the civil war, to the point where it's now barely recognizable.[2]
The Docks
The grand docks at the city's coast had once served as the main way of accessing the sea, sheltered by an enormous natural ridge. Though the ridge still stands, the docks themselves were burned down by one of the factions during the civil war. For now, the city is accessible by sea only by small boats rowing to the shore.[5]

Mentions

Shallan thinks Tozbek might take her back to Vedenar if they were unable to catch up with Jasnah Kholin.[7] She had originally set sail from Vedenar.[8]

Stormwardens in both Vedenar and Kholinar have concluded that storm water provides more nourishment to plants than lake or river water, which Kaladin thinks is a redundant conclusion.[9]

Terxim mentions dining in Veden City before travelling to Kholinar via Urithiru, and presumably the oathgates.[10]

Dunny mentions that Sigzil thinks he is originally from Jah Keved, and Rock suggests they might be cousins due to the proximity between Vedenar and the Horneater Peaks.[11]

Jasnah tells Shallan to seek out the Devotary of Sincerity, saying that tho there is none in Kharbranth, there is some in Vedenar.[12]

Tyn relays to Shallan that it is difficult to get information out of Vedenar after the assassination of king Hanavanar, his son and six of the other Highprinces.[13] According to Tyn's sources, Highprince Valam's forces were preparing to seize the city.[14]

Redin once visited Davar manor to solicit evidence about Shallan's mother's death and mentioned that there would always be willing ears in Vedenar to anyone who wanted to bring evidence.[15]

Revilar gloats to Lin Davar about being invited to visit the highprince in Vedenar regularly.[16]

Balat Davar confesses that he would willingly move to Vedenar and live as tenth dahn to live with Eylita Tavinar to escape their fathers oppression.[17] Shallan suggests he leave while their father is visiting Vedenar later in the month.[18] Later Balat plans to use the cover of visiting some eastern villages to escape to Vedenar.[19]
