Riino is an Elantrian (once Hoed) and a member of the Ire[1][2][3] from Sel who serves as a lighthouse keeper and oracle near Kholinar in Shadesmar on Roshar. His name derives from Aon Rii. Riino is a follower of Shu-Korath, or at least has been heavily exposed to it, because he swears by Domi. He is bald and Kaladin is convinced that he is a Shin. Riino seems to be fairly cosmere-aware, mentioning being Invested, Heightenings, and Surgebinding.[4]

History

Riino becomes an Elantrian at some point before the Reod; he eventually becomes a Hoed, repeating a mantra of "Beautiful, once so very beautiful...", referring to the lost beauty of Elantris and the Elantrians.[5] He survives until Raoden, ten years after the Reod, realizes what his mantra means and attempts to get information on AonDor from him. Riino displays just enough rationality and memory to direct Raoden to put him into Devotion's Perpendicularity, where he appears to dissolve.[6][7]

In fact, he is transported to the Cognitive Realm and eventually takes up a post at a lighthouse in Shadesmar. When Kaladin, Shallan, Adolin, and Azure accidentally enter Shadesmar, their travels bring them to Riino. Kaladin attempts to sneak up on Riino, who--possibly using an enhanced life sense--detects him anyway. Riino introduces himself as the "Rii Oracle" and offers to tell Kaladin's fortune during a highstorm. He has a large sphere filled with Stormlight that shows Kaladin visions during the highstorm when he puts his hand on it. Riino is surprised that Kaladin can see using the sphere, and guesses how Kaladin has access to Investiture. After Shallan, Adolin, and Azure arrive, Riino negotiates prices with them on supplies, and helps them get a ship to Celebrant.[4]

Appearance and Personality

As a Hoed, he is small and extremely wrinkled; Raoden thinks he appears to be "a thousand years old".[6] When Kaladin and the others meet him, he has retained the wrinkled skin and also has the bald head common to Elantrians. Kaladin thinks he is Shin[4], presumably because, as an offworlder, he lacks the epicanthic fold seen in most Rosharans but the Shin.

He displays a flair for showmanship; in his role as a fortune seer, he delivers a dramatic speech to entice potential customers into paying for fortunes, and confesses that he quite enjoys doing so. Once he realizes that Kaladin is not there for a fortune, however, he becomes businesslike and helpful, setting the travelers up with transportation and supplies.[4]
