This information has the potential to ruin plot elements of both published works and upcoming book releases for the reader. It should also be considered uncanonical and could completely change in the future.

Oathbringer is the current working title for the third book in The Stormlight Archive. Brandon had also mentioned "Skybreakers" as a working title (due to Stones Unhallowed sounding too similar to the title of Patrick Rothfuss' "Doors of Stone", which is expected to be released about the same time[1]) before settling on the title Oathbringer. It is currently planned to be released in Fall 2016 at the very earliest, but more likely 2017.[2]

Behind the Scenes

Brandon wrote a few "exploratory scenes" for "Stones Unhallowed" during the summer of 2014, however he didn't start in earnest on the book until June 2015. He plans to on screen-capture part of the writing process, as he did with Words of Radiance's Rysn interlude.[3]

The original outline called for the flashback sequence to focus on Szeth-son-son-Vallano, however Brandon later changed his mind. He planned on writing parts of the flashbacks for Szeth as well as Eshonai and Dalinar Kholin, to help him decide who can best get across the information he needs to.[3].

The tentative title "Stones Unhallowed", like all planned titles for The Stormlight Archive would have been the title of an in-world book, likely in relation to Urithiru which Ali-daughter-Hasweth mentions was at times the Shins' only connection to the outside world due to its "stones unhallowed". [4]

The Highprince of War was the original working title for the fifth book in The Stormlight Archive, but as of June 2015 Brandon has indicated this will be changed - Dalinar's flashback sequence is now planned for book 3, and the working title is Oathbringer [5]. It is to tell the backstory of Dalinar Kholin in the Flashbacks, although Brandon has repeatedly asserted that the fact that the book shows his back story doesn't guarantee that Dalinar will be alive for the events of Highprince of War.[6] The book's Knights Radiant Order will likely be the Bondsmiths.

Progress

Brandon has indicated that he has finished Dalinar's flashback chapters in July. There are 15 flashback chapters in total, with a sum word count of around 55,000 words.[7]. He has estimated that the total wordcount will be 400,000 words.
