Valam princedom was a Veden princedom on Roshar.[1] After the fall of House Valam, it is under the control of Taravangian.[2]

Geography and Ecology[edit]

House Davar's estates are located in the former Valam princedom.[1] They are described as "backcountry" and it takes at least a half a day to travel across them.[3][4] Revilar's lands border those of House Davar.[4] The size of the princedom and its location within Jah Keved are not known, but Shallan Davar describes her family's lands as "nowhere near" the capital of Vedenar on the southern coast.[5]

The area appears to have a temperate climate, with distinct seasons.[6] Flora and fauna are typical of eastern Roshar, including rockbuds, shalebark, and jella trees.[4] Many species of cremlings also flourish.[7] Domesticated animals include axehounds and horses.[8][9]

Economy[edit]

The princedom's lands are largely rural and contain a notable amount of arable land.[7] Agriculture appears to drive the economy, including commodities such as breachtree cotton and shum as well as textiles made from those materials.[4]

History[edit]

The ruling family of the princedom was House Valam, led by Highprince Valam.[1] There were ten prominent lighteyed landowners who directly served Valam, including Lin Davar and Revilar.[4] Valam used his illegitimate son Redin as an enforcer.[10] Valam had other children (including Sudi Valam), but they all preceded him in death.[2]

The princedom had sufficient power to emerge victorious in the bloody Veden civil war of succession in 1173.[2] This victory was influenced by Taravangian and the Diagram, who had Szeth assassinate the other six highprinces who were vying for the throne.[5] Valam became king of Jah Keved and quickly recognized that Taravangian had contrived this outcome.[2] However, due to his severe illness and lack of heirs, he turned the kingdom over to Taravangian anyway.[2] Valam then instructed Redin to kill him,[2] presumably dissolving the Valam princedom.

Politics[edit]

The landowners who served Valam effectively acted as autonomous rulers of their lands.[7] The highprince lived in Vedenar and did not regularly visit many areas of the princedom.[4]
