Brightlord Roshone is a lighteyes in Alethkar on Roshar. He is the citylord of Hearthstone.

Appearance and Personality

Roshone is middle-aged, with a short, grey-streaked beard and an angry expression. He has light yellow eyes that seems to blame everyone and everything for his banishment [2].

He wears a sword and a takama, but seems a little too old and flabby to be a true soldier. Roshone was not important enough to have stewardship over any of the highprince's lands.[2]

He is vindictive towards Kaladin's family, and Dalinar Kholin considers him a petty man.[3]

By the time of the true desolation, he seems to soften, probably because of guilt. He dresses out of fashion and wears a wooden foot on his right leg. [2]

History

Kholinar and the Roshone Affair

Roshone owned several silversmith shops in Kholinar, and used his connection with Elhokar Kholin to further his own interests. He had become a confidant of Elhokar, who was then the crown-prince of Alethkar, in charge of overseeing the country while his father was away at the Shattered Plains. Roshone convinced the prince to arrest two elderly darkeyed silversmiths, his business rivals and Moash's grandparents, on false charges, where they died in prison awaiting trial. Upon discovering what had happened, Dalinar initially wanted to strip Roshone of his rank and wealth, but political pressures forced him to instead exile Roshone to "a place he couldn't do any more harm".[3]

First years as Citylord of Hearthstone

Roshone had been shipped to Hearthstone as punishment for the deaths Moash’s grandparents. He becomes the new citylord of the town, where the previous citylord, Wistiow, had died.[4].

From the very beginning, he suspects that Lirin stole spheres from citylord Wistiow, and so treats Lirin and his family badly. Though there is a debate between Roshone and Lirin, it doesn't bring him a satisfying result.[5]

Eventually Roshone and his son Rillir go on a whitespine hunt where both of them are badly injured. Lirin, Hearthstone's surgeon, does save Roshone's life but can't save Rillir.[6] When Brightlord Amaram, a distant cousin of Roshone, comes through the town to recruit, Roshone takes his revenge by deciding that Tien has to join the army.[7] At this event, it is obvious that the daughter of former citylord Wistiow, Laral, who was supposed to marry Rillir, would now marry Roshone.

After the Everstorm

Roshone's manor survived the Everstorm and he sheltered the village in it. The parlor became a surgeon's triage room, with mats laid out on the floor bearing wounded.[2] He was indeed married to Laral, who claims to be happy with the agreement, and seems to be in charge of the town, as the soldiers need her approval and not Roshones to follow Kaladin's orders. [1].

When Kaladin arrived to their Manor, Roshones first instinct was bully him, but after a punch and Kaladin’s explanation on the arrival of the true desolation, he sinks. It is Laral who finally steps in and confirms they will lead and take care of their people. [1]

Relationships

Lirin

Roshone and Lirin have a complicated relationship since they met. When Lirin welcomed their new Brightlord, Rosohones reply was a blame on him for letting Wistiow die and him being his replacement[4]. Their relationship was worsen when he found that Lirin had a goblet full of spheres claiming it was a gift from Wistiow before his death. Roshone made pubic he believes Lirin stole them.[8]

This changed the relationship with Lilin and the town. Lirin hadn’t stopped healing or surgery. The townspeople had simply stopped their donations, all at a word from Roshone.[8]

After some time, Roshone asked Lirin to go visit him and tried to bully him into giving him a good amount of spheres to let he subject drop. He did not agree but continue a political game.[5]

Six months later, Roshone and his son Rillir went hunting and both got injured. Lirin worked on them both, but Rillir died. Roshone was saved and only lost his leg.[6] This ended up sealing the bad relationship between them and it concluded in Roshone choosing Tien to go into war and Kaladin following to protect him. With this, Lirin lost both his sons in one day.[7]

Many years later, after the Everstorm came, Kaladin went to visit the town and found that Lirin and Roshone have a better relationship, probably out of guilt from Roshone.[2]

Laral

Wistiow’s wealth had gone to Laral. When Roshone had been given authority over Hearthstone and granted the mansion and surrounding lands, Highprince Sadeas had given Laral a dowry in compensation. Because of this, Roshone saw the need of marrying her into her family.[5] Originally, she was engaged to his son Rillir, but after his death in the hunt, this engagement was made to Roshone himself.[7]

By the time of the true desolation, Laral and Roshone had been married for some time. She seems satisfied with the agreement and even defended him before Kaladin when he spoke ill of him. She seems to have used the marriage to become politically engaged and has strong loyalty from their soldiers.[1]

Kaladin

Kaladin was deeply influenced by Roshone in many levels including his vision on lighteyes. He considers them corrupt to the core, for all his outward poise and beauty. They were like rotting corpses clothed in beautiful silk. [9]. Kaladins life changed since he met Roshone. His family was cornered to eating low cost food and were alienated from the townpeople.[5]. As Roshone and Lirin’s relationship worsen, so did Kaladin’s life, ending in him going after Tien to Amaram’s army.[7]

Another collateral damage for Kaladin was losing [[Laral], both as friend and as possible love interest. After Roshone’s arrival, he decided she would be married into his family.[5]

Later, Kaladin finds that Roshone lived in Kholinar but had been involved in the deaths of some citizens—Moash’s grandparents—and had been shipped to Heatshtone as punishment.[2]

Kaladin finally makes peace with Roshone after the Everstorm when he goes and visits them. In the beginning, he wanted revenge and punches him, but then he understands there are more evil people and that he was just a lesser lighteye. He recognizes he doesn’t have any passion on abusing him and better prompts him to raise as leader to help his town. [1]
