The Sea of Lost Lights is a large sea in eastern Shadesmar, the subastral of Roshar.[1] The reasons behind its name is unknown.

Geography

The Sea of Lost Lights lies in the region of Shadesmar corresponding to the Physical nations of Alethkar, Jah Keved and Herdaz, as well as Frostlands and Unclaimed Hills.[2] To the west, if flows into the Sea of Souls; to the east, it reaches the shores of the Expanse of the Broken Sky and Expanse of the Vapors.[1] It has numerous narrow strips of land crossing it, corresponding to Physical rivers, and several small islands - lakes, in the Physical Realm.[3]

Like all "seas" in Shadesmar, the Sea of Lost Lights isn't actually filled with water, but rather small beads that represent the various Cognitive Realm aspects of physical objects.[4] There is no wind there, nor any weather phenomena other than strips of clouds common to all of Shadesmar.[5]

Notable locations

Bodies of water

Settlements

Though there are numerous worldhoppers visiting Shadesmar, its cities are populated mainly by different types of sapient spren.[5][6]

Channels

The Physical rivers are represented in Shadesmar as channels of land.

History

Shallan, Azure, Adolin, and Kaladin get trapped in the Sea of Lost Lights after they attempt to use the Oathgate in Kholinar.[citation needed] Azure seems very knowledgeable about the place and says the way to get back to the Physical Realm is through Cultivation's Perpendicularity at the Horneater Peaks.[citation needed] The rivers in the Physical Realm become peninsulas here made of an obsidian-like material. There are plants growing on this, and Syl says they grow just like normal plants. They travel along the peninsula to a lighthouse at its end. Inside this lighthouse is a man, Riino, who Kaladin thinks is Shin, but is likely from Sel as he references the Korathi god. He claims that his orb can see the future. Kaladin looks in this orb and feels strongly that he needs to go to Thaylen City and thinks that Dalinar is in grave danger.[citation needed]

They get a ride on a boat sailed by lightspren, or Reachers. The boats are pulled by Mandras, which have heads the look like Luckspren. The Reachers have fabrials that can create water. They are sailing to Celebrant, a city on an island that is the Sea of Spears in the Physical Realm. The captain says that they have perfect spheres there that never run out of Stormlight.[citation needed]
