It is not known what Adonalsium is, whether it be a person or a great power. Since Shards have been called pieces of the power of creation,6072 it is theorized that Adonalsium is in fact the power of creation. Regardless of its nature, Adonalsium was Shattered by the original sixteen Vessels, and thus the Shards of Adonalsium came into being. There's a total of sixteen Shards.

The Shards of Adonalsium, or Shards for short, are sixteen pieces of the power of creation.6072 They are each named after a specific characteristic or ideal that represents the Shard's primary purpose or motivation. A person who has taken up the power of a Shard is the Vessel of that Shard.5

  +
The Shards are the most powerful known entities in the cosmere, and for all intents and purposes, serve as the gods of the cosmere. Most if not all magic systems are related to them.
These Shards are named after their respective intent, which represents the driving force of the power--an aspect of creation. However, after the Shattering, the Shards were left with no mind to control the power. For Realmatic reasons, a mind--Cognitive power--must be attached to the Spiritual power of the Shard. People, Rayse and Bavadin for example, take up these Shards.

When a person takes up a Shard, the extreme power vaporizes the body, allowing the person's mind to expand.6072 From then on, the person's consciousness feeds on the power of the Shard to remain alive, but the Shard's intent is the driving force of the power. Over an immense time--centuries, perhaps millennia--a Vessel’s mind begins to change, slowly molding to the Shard's intent.5485sa15527

Power
It is not clear who the original Vessels were, but they all originally were from Yolen. Together, the sixteen of them killed Adonalsium and divided the power between themselves, becoming the first to Ascend.3 Over time, the Vessels begin referring to themselves as their Shard's name (though they do remember their original selves).7264 They eventually scattered throughout the cosmere, taking residence on several different worlds and influencing events on their given planet. Ruin and Preservation made a pact to create life on Scadrial,mb3 and constructed humans in the form which they have seen beforemb3--presumably on the planet where Adonalsium and these Vessels came from. Judging from humanity on other Shardworlds, the Shards on those worlds probably created humanity there, too. However, the worlds existed before the Shards arrived there7262 so there is a case to be made that humans already have been present before the Shards’ arrival in some cases. It is known that some shards may have helped transplant humanity to other worlds as well.sa38243

  +
Each Shard is a piece of the power of creation with a specific motivation, such as to destroy or to preserve. Those fragments each began their existence with equal level of power; however, over time many have diminished, whether through conflict or by the act of Investing a world -- imbuing it with Investiture. Each Shard has its own Investiture; while a Shard can co-opt the Investiture of another Shard, that Investiture can become noticeably red.8340

  +
Investing in a world will produce numerous effects, most notably the creation of a magic system tied to the Shard. While a Shard doesn't have complete control over how the magic system functions or what it does, it can manipulate its mechanics to an extent.60724242 Moreover, the presence of a Shard leads to the formation of a Perpendicularity, a well of the Shard's Investiture that pierces all three Realms, allowing for worldhopping.sa3 The Shard's Investiture can also manifest directly in the world in other ways; examples of such manifestations are atium and lerasium on Scadrial, the Tears of Edgli on Nalthis, or the many spren of Roshar.
At least one of the vessels regrets taking up their power, though it is unknown which of them this refers to.11900

  +
It is possible for a Shard to be broken down into multiple smaller Shards with different Intents.15990 It is currently unknown whether this has ever happened before, or how it would be accomplished.
Often, a Vessel's original name is mentioned in some form on their world. Atium is named after Ati, lerasium after Leras, and those condensed essences of their Shards' power. AonDor is derived from Aona, a Vessel on Sel. sa1 The Tears of Edgli is a valuable flower on Nalthis, named after Edgli, vessel of Endowment.

  +
Vessel
It is possible for a Vessel to be separated from their Shard without dying120 or Splintering the Shard they held.6587 When a Vessel dies, the person's original body rematerializes and falls to the ground as a corpse.mb3

  +
To function properly, a Shard requires a Vessel -- a mind to control it, belonging to a sapient creature from the Physical Realm, such as a human.310 Currently, there is only one Shard held by a Dragon (Cultivation).15149 One doesn't need to be able to use Investiture in order to become a Vessel, but the ability does help.4062 What becoming a Vessel requires above all is Connection to the Shard in question, whether forged artificially or driven by a natural inclination towards the Shard's intent.5 Upon Ascension, a Vessel loses its connection to its former species -- for example, a human who Ascended is no longer considered human.4709 However, it is possible for Vessels to reproduce.6383

  +
The act of becoming a Vessel is called Ascension, and causes the Vessel's body to vaporize and mind to expand.6072 From then on, the Vessel and the Shard are intertwined; the Vessel gets to set some general course of how the Shard's power is defined, and feeds off the Shard's power to remain alive, but the Shard's power is the driving force between the two. Over centuries, the Vessel's mind begins to change to fit the Shard's intent more perfectly.79655485sa1 If a Vessel fights against their Shards intent, they can be left vulnerable.sa4 If the Vessel were to give up the Shard, the Shard's influence on their mind would fade over time.3009
Two of the original Vessels were relatives.1291

  +
A Shard can be killed by Splintering it, breaking its power down further into smaller pieces, called splinters; the easiest way to achieve that is by killing the mind.3 The actual death of a Vessel, however, can take up to hundreds of years.8144 If the Shard is taken up before the Vessel dies completely, splintering can be prevented;3 if not, the power will become wild and dangerous.Selish A Shard without a Vessel will eventually gain sentience.5816 When a Vessel dies, the person's original body materializes and falls to the ground as a corpse.mb3 However, it does not age rapidly, since Shardic immortality is different from other methods like atium compounding.3870
Ruin and Preservation were drawn together because they were such perfect opposites (though not all Shards have pairs like those ones do).5518 Direct confrontation between their two powers was excruciatingly painful, and they eventually destroyed each other and the power of both shards was taken up by Sazed, forming the new shard 'Harmony'. It is not clear whether if any two Shards collided, they would both die, or if this was simply an effect of Ruin and Preservation having such opposite intents.

  +
It is possible for Vessels to be separated from their Shards without dying or Splintering the Shards they held.120658714278 If this happens, then after the Vessel's death, it is able to resist the pull into the Beyond.6
It is implied that not all Shards are equal (though they started at an equal level).1081 Rayse is said to hold the most dangerous of the sixteen, Odium.sa1TWoK It is unknown what makes Odium inherently so dangerous, whether it is due to the intent, or because Odium actually has more power than other Shards.

  +
A mentally ill Vessel can affect the Shard's intent.13090
Odium was powerful enough to travel to Sel, kill Aona and Skai, and Splinter their power:

It is unknown what precisely Adonalsium was, though it has been referred to numerous times as the power of creation, suggesting it to be the progenitor god of the cosmere. At some point in the distant past, on the planet of Yolen, sixteen people conspired to kill it, and succeeded in an event known as the Shattering of Adonalsium.3 Some of those people were romantically involved; others were related to each other.12912786 All of them were mortal at some point.13341
It is unknown if Odium is special in his ability to Splinter a Shard, but regardless, the person who wrote the Letter is terrified of Odium's power.

  +
Following the Shattering, the power that comprised Adonalsium broke into sixteen pieces, each polarized to one particular aspect of it, such as Ruin or Endowment.9507 Those pieces, each equal in power,13482 became known as the Shards. The sixteen killers of Adonalsium each took up one of the Shards, Ascending and becoming the first Vessels.3 Following their Ascension, each of the Vessels departed Yolen. Some settled on various planets, while others set no roots.4441 At this time they all had an equal amount of power.13482
Odium is not native on Roshar6918 and it's not known yet whether any Shard is native on its Shardworld.9934

Originally, the Shards made an agreement not to interfere with each other,sa3 but they did not make a formal oath13144 and many of the Shards chose not to keep to the agreement.sa3 Additionally, Honor felt he did not break the agreement by traveling with Cultivation,10835 suggesting the wording of the agreement may not have been as precise as Shards like Endowment thought.
If Brandon were to do a novel where different magic systems collide as the focus of the book, he refers to it as a conflux book.10125

  +
Over the millennia, several Shards have passed away, one way or another. The most common cause of death for them were actions of one specific Shard, Odium, who went on a killing spree, splintering Ambition, Devotion, Dominion and Honor before eventually being trapped in the Rosharan system by the remnants of the latter.Rosharan The death of Preservation's Vessel, Leras, led to the power being passed between several hands before it was eventually combined with Ruin to form Harmony.mb36 By contrast, Autonomy spread, creating avatars to inhabit numerous planets, including Obrodai and First of the Sun.11432
The Seventeenth Shard, however, is not a Shard of Adonalsium, but rather an organization of people who hop between worlds.44394013

  +
At least one of the Vessels regrets taking up a Shard, though which one that would be is unknown.11900 There are living descendants of some of them still alive.13341 At least one Shard other than Odium has been forced to leave their planet after its destruction.12759
One does not need to be able to use Investiture in order to take up a Shard, but the ability does help.4062

Hybrid Shards
It is likely that this is a complete list of all the Shards for the published Shardworlds. Some worlds have more Shards than others.5943

Several of the known Shards are dead in the current time, with Ambition, Virtuosity, Honor, Devotion and Dominion all being Splintered,Rosharan with the remnants of Devotion and Dominion having been combined together in the Cognitive Realm as the Dor.Sel Ruin and Preservation, on the other hand, have blended together into Harmony, albeit they remain somewhat separate within this unified construct.6486 It is possible for the remnants of the Shard Honor to merge with Odium to form a new Shard.13819
According to Brandon, it's possible that there is an Ingenuity Shard.102883299 This is not confirmed, although he did claim it would be the Shard he would take up if he was a Vessel.

Ruin and Preservation are the only Shards on Scadrial at the moment.5599 By the time of the Hero of Ages spoiler thread (before the Way of Kings release), Brandon mentioned that there were four Shards other than Ruin and Preservation that have been seen:

Raoden interacts with a second voice when he jumps into the Perpendicularity in Elantris (presumably Aona's). At one point, there was an unknown Shard that does not inhabit a planet,4441 which likely referred to Virtuosity.15530 Similarly, at one point there was at least one unknown Shard that had been Splintered by Odium,1357 though the Splintered Shard Ambition has been revealed since then.
With the Way of Kings, the Letter demystifies the other two unaccounted for Shards: we had not directly met Skai's Shard, but his power on the planet of Sel has been seen (and, presumably, his related magic, with the Dakhor). And Odium traveled to Sel, killing Aona and Skai, so by default his influence is pervasive on Sel.sa1 So, all the Shards on Scadrial, Sel, and Nalthis are accounted for.

There are three Shards on Roshar5523 and they are confirmed to be Honor, Odium, and Cultivation.10113 Honor and Cultivation arrived at the same time on Roshar,1169 prior to Odium's appearance.9934

Therefore, for all Shardworlds that have been seen, all Shards are known.

The intent of one unknown Shard has been described, but not explicitly named:

Shards possess incredible power -- a single Shard can easily move entire planets and alter people down to the genetic level.mb3 They exist in all three Realms, but unlike other living beings, the vast majority of their power is concentrated in the Cognitive and Spiritual. Shards do not appear in the Cognitive Realm like other entities (such as a bead on Roshar).14026 Time matters little to Shards, and they can bend and stretch it as they wish.mb3
There is also a shard that doesn't inhabit any planet.4441 While Ambition fits that description, Brandon was referring to another Shard.2550

  +
Vessels also gain an immense amount of knowledge upon Ascending, more than they can process immediately. They can gain more knowledge instantaneously, but this is not automatic, and requires them to consciously gain that knowledge.16293
Also, one that had already been splintered, but its intent was still unknown at the time of the questioning.1357 This may refer to Ambition.

  +
As Investiture never truly goes away, a Shard has access to a functionally-endless supply of it; however, there is a finite amount that a Vessel can command at any one time. This means that while all Investiture in the cosmere is assigned to one Shard or another, a Shard cannot truly command all of it at once.8605 As such, while powerful, Shards are not omniscient, omnipresent, nor omnipotent.sa4
There is a Shard with an intent similar to Wisdom, that has "realized that survival might not be the most desirable/important".12684

  +
A Shard's power can be temporarily diminished, either by assigning it to living creatures (such as people or spren), or sending it back to the Spiritual Realm (e.g. burning atium). Moreover, Shards are, as powers, bound to follow higher rules; a deal, once made by a Shard, cannot be broken, and they must absolutely obey the rules that govern them.sa3 Breaking such deals will leave holes in them that another Shard can exploit to kill them.sa4sa4
The last six Shards are unknown.

  +
Each Shard appears particularly predisposed toward acting in line with their intent; for example, Preservation finds it nearly impossible to destroy, while it's extremely easy for Ruin to do so.2 This is partially influenced by the personality change brought about by the Shard.6685 However, whether intentions provide Shards with actual unique powers is unknown.

A Shard is a chunk of Investiture with intent, while held by a Vessel that vessel is able to guide that power to do incredible things so long as that corresponds with its intent. An individual Shard's abilities may vary depending on their intent, but such distinctions are not fully understood at this time.

Movement
Shards are a vast amount of Spiritual energy, and have enormous capabilities, so much power that they have effectively turned the Vessels holding them into gods. Things like moving a planet is easy for them to accomplish.mb3 They exist on a higher level than the Physical Realm, and have expanded Cognitive aspects and perceptions. Time seems to matter little to Shards. Minutes can pass like hours.mb3

  +
Shards are capable of appearing in various parts of their own Invested worlds instantaneously.mb3 They can also travel to other planets by willing themselves to do so.sa15526 However, when a Shard Invests its power in a world, it's bound to it and will have difficulty leaving the system it is in.9852 Shards can also trap each other in systems, though the precise mechanics of that are unknown.sa3
Movement
Shards are capable of moving themselves to various parts of their world instantaneously (or near instantly).mb3 They can will themselves to other Shardworlds, as noted from Odium's journey to Selsa1 and Brandon implying that Sazed could travel to another world, but chooses not to.5526 Lord Ruler was also capable of moving around worlds when he took up the power at the Well of Ascension, but he also didn't. However, when a Shard invest its power to a world, it is bound to it and will have difficulty leaving the planet or system.9852 For example, Ruin and Preservation couldn't leave Scadrial for they had had a large hand in the creation of the planet and every thing on Scadrial contains a small part of the Shards.cite In the Second Letter, Odium is implied to be trapped at his current system.

Magic Generation
+
Communication
  +
Shards have several ways of communicating with people. Some Shards can speak directly into the minds of others, while others can listen.mb3 A Shard can also communicate with a person directly through dreams or visions, and even take on a physical form -- a puppet of sorts, serving as a Physical outlet for communication.sa3sa3 While the use of visions and speaking directly into a mind are limited to a single person, a puppet can be seen by many people.sa3
Shards will begin to fuel magic when they settle on a world. Each Shard can do this differently, though much of the system is restricted by the world itself. Because of this, the Shard is able to directly interact with the users of the magic and provide the needed investiture. Ruin and Preservation's ability to fuel all the Metallic Arts is an example of this.6072

  +
A Shard can also communicate directly with Cognitive Shadows.1
Communication
Some shards have the ability to touch the minds of people. This ability has many restrictions and much may depend on the intent of each shard.

Ruin can whisper into the minds of humans, especially spiked humans to whom he could manifest and speak to directly. Preservation can see into the minds of humans and even influence them a small amount, like getting them to leave an earring off. however that influence is very weak and easily be overcome by a persons own will.cite

Future Sight
+
Mind Capacity
  +
Upon Ascension, the Vessel's mind will be greatly expanded, allowing a far greater capacity to think than a mortal could.sa4 A Shard is capable of bilocation -- being present in several places at once -- within its sphere of influence.1 As moments can pass like years to a Shard, they can also appear to think far faster than normal minds. Fundamental understanding of the cosmere, to the point of axi and anti-axi, also comes as a result.sa416293 They seem to possess flawless memory, with no obvious upper limit, as Sazed is able to absorb the tremendous amount of knowledge in his metalminds.mb3
Shards can see into the future, though this is difficult to do. Honor describes seeing the future like "It's as if the future is a shattering window. The further you look, the more pieces that window breaks into."twok Some Shards are better at seeing into the future--Honor says Cultivation is better at future sight than Honor.twok Preservation saw into the future and created the Terris Prophecies.5309 Most of the time, temporal abilities are related to the pure essence of a Shard (see atium) or to a Splinter (like Returned do).4645 Since Wyrn can see into the future through some method, it is theorized he may hold a Splinter or be a Sliver, but he may also have this power via seon or skaze.

  +
However, contrary to what many believes, Shards are neither omniscient nor omnipresent.sa4 They can only appear at limited places at once, and can be distracted, deceived or surprised. It is also possible to block a Shard's senses away from a certain area. They are incapable of breaking a formal contract, at least not without seriously wounding themselves.sa4
Cognitive Constructs
Shards can develop complex constructs with their power. Preservation made the mists Snap Allomancers long after his mind had withered away.4445 Honor created a visual journal which Dalinar now sees during highstorms.twok That visual journal was propagated by the Stormfather. Honor also created many Spren out of investiture and was even able to alter and increase the mind of the Stormfather. Entities like the Mist spirit and the Stormfather are often called Cognitive Shadows, bits of mind with power doing tasks created for them.

Endless investiture
+
Creating Sapience
  +
Shards can use their power to create complex constructs, capable of continuing their function past the Shard's death. Examples of such constructs are the snapping mists of Preservation,4445 and the vision journal of Honor.sa1 Shards can also create sapient beings from their power -- this is most commonly seen on Roshar, with its overabundance of spren. Many of them, like the Stormfather, Nightwatcher, and honorspren were created by local Shards.sa3sa3
Investiture never goes away and always returns; a Vessel wielding a Shard has access to an endless supply of Investiture. However, there is a finite amount that a Vessel can wield at one time. Occasionally a Shard's power is condensed into a different form in the physical realm. Investiture can appear in one of three states: a gas or mist like substance, a liquid, or a solid. Stormlight and the mists on Scadrial are examples of investiture manifesting as a gas. The Well of Ascension is Preservation's power, condensed as a liquid. Some Aspects of Shards' power regenerate over time. The Well of Ascension reformed every 1024 years5511 rather than vanishing forever. Atium also regenerates, though when atium was burned away, Ruin was not able to use it. It isn't known whether all of a Shard's power would regenerate eventually.

  +
Shards can also create avatars, personas that can act independently of them.13220 Avatars can be of any gender, race, and species, regardless of the original Vessel creating them, and can be formed at a considerable distance from the main body of the Shard, with many different avatars able to exist on a single planet.39749385 Though a Shard can create them directly, avatars can also form without a conscious decision on the Shard's part, though the Shard is still aware of what is happening.13220 When created directly, however, they can be instilled with specific traits.sa3 Some avatars are self-aware, while others are not, although the parent Shard will always be aware. Though some would call these avatars Splinters, it is not clear whether they truly fit the definition.1332313339
Weaknesses
One of the largest weaknesses a Shard has is that its Vessel is shaped to its intent. Ruin and Preservation could not create by themselves, as it was against their Shards' intent to do so alone. Odium refuses to take additional Shards simply because doing so would change his personality.6685

  +
Avatars are, in a way, considered to be Shards in their own right.8606 Known ones include Patji and the Sand Lord, both of Autonomy.89025876 It is difficult but possible for someone to become a Vessel of an avatar.13323
Shards, though their minds are significantly expanded, are not omniscient, omnipresent nor omnipotent. Even after Ruin was free from his prison, he couldn't influence everything. After the catacendre, Sazed can more easily influence events where the mists are located,5308 which implies that there is a limit to his Shards' powers.

  +
Shardic power is also directly related to sentience and sapience. The close presence of a particular Shard, such as Cultivation, can lead to some beings developing higher levels of sapience.2792 Shardic power can also grant sentience directly -- Scadrians are sapient due to Preservation's power within them, and Nightblood's sapience is partially derived from his large quantity of Breaths. Splinters can also become sapient.1799 Even the raw power of a Shard, if left alone and without a Vessel, will eventually begin to form a rudimentary mind.Selishsa4
Ruin could not read minds, but this is not a limitation to all Shards. Ruin is invasive, it can insert thoughts, but that power can't hear the reaction. Preservation listens and protects, and as such can hear what is inside people's minds, but cannot insert thoughts.4156 Brandon has also stated, however, that Shardic mind reading in this case has to do with humans having more Preservation than Ruin.4139 It is possible a Shard could only read a mind when the Shard has given its power to make sentience (as Preservation did with humans on Scadrial). If that were true, then if Odium did not give humans sentience on Roshar, Odium would also not be able to read minds, similar to Ruin.

  +
Magic Generation
Preservation and Ruin are blind to metal, the focus of the Metallic Arts. It is not clear if other Shards are blind to an aspect of their respective focus, but Brandon has stated that Sazed is also blind to metal.6149

  +
When a Shard Invests a world, it will begin to fuel the local magic system. Each Shard can do this differently, though much of the system is dictated by the planet itself. Because of this connection to the magic, a Shard is able to directly interact with its users and provide Investiture when necessary, without the need for intermediaries.6072

  +
While not all magic systems in the cosmere are directly tied to a Shard, Shardic presence greatly influences the shape a magic system takes. On a planet inhabited by a Shard, magic forms as a result of the interactions between a Shard's power, Realmatics, the world's natural inclinations and, in some cases, even genetics.6072 For this reason, the exact function magic performs will not always be related to the Shard's nature -- for example, Surgebinding, despite being powered by Honor, is capable of manipulating Division, which controls separating things. However, how the magic is obtained is tied to the Shard.4032 Hemalurgy demands that a person be destroyed, in line with the intent of Ruin, while Surgebinding demands forging bonds.
Honor states to Dalinar that a champion may bind Odium, but it is unknown what he meant.sa1

Shards can perceive the future, although it can be difficult for them. Some are better at it than others, with Cultivation and Preservation being noted as particularly excelling.sa15309 Like all seers, Shards can be wrong about both what they see and how they interpret it, although as a general rule they see further than non-Shards.sa3 Shardic power can also be utilized by others to perceive the future as they do: examples of this are atium, as well as the visions of the Returned.4645
A Shard's power can take many different forms, related to the three realms: the Physical, the Cognitive, and the Spiritual.4445 All are extensions of the Shard's power, and in The Hero of Ages, sometimes referred to as the body of the Shard.mb3

  +
Both Preservation and Honor describe seeing the future as not one set path, but a tangled web of linked possibilities, as well as the circumstances necessary to bring them about, with some being more likely than others. As a result, predicting the future is not a straightforward process, and is not equally useful to all seers. Upon Ascension to Odium, Taravangian realized that there are possibilities of future that Rayse had not seen, implying the future sight ability may be related to the Vessel as well.sa4
In its Physical form, it can appear as a solid, and does one specific thing.6072 On Scadrial, a Shards' Physical essence was a metal, and these god metals each performed a specific effect within the Metallic Arts. Yet, as evidenced by the god metal atium, the physical essence of a Shard can be used by magic systems created by other shards. For example, Atium, Ruin's "body", could be burned by a mistborn or atium misting, both of whom use magic created by or based on Preservation.

  +
It is theorized that a Shard's intent may be tied to its proficiency with future sight. Preservation, as a Shard dedicated to keeping things existing, and Cultivation, a Shard dedicated to growing something in a desired form, would hold a natural interest in predicting what the future will hold which may make them more proficient with this ability. By contrast, a Shard like Ruin, which is interested only in destroying things, and Honor, about holding to one's oaths, would not have "seeing ahead" as part of their nature.
In its liquid form, it is most potent.6072 The Well of Ascension is one such pool of a Shard's power, and as it was formed from Preservation's own mind, the liquid essence of a Shard is said to be related to the Cognitive aspect. Many Shards have such a Perpendicularity. Ruin's is located below the Pits of Hathsin.5525 Raoden encounters a Perpendicularity, where Hoed can go to relieve their pain.Elantris That Perpendicularity is theorized to be Aona's.cite

The raw Investiture of a Shard can take distinct forms and states. As a solid, the Investiture is metallic, and is thus sometimes referred to as a God Metal. Examples of God Metals are atium, lerasium, raysium, and the alloy of Honor and Cultivation that forms Shardblades. God Metals typically have properties within the Metallic Arts, regardless of what Shard they're aligned with.6072
There are further subdivisions of Shards: Slivers and Splinters.

  +
Shardic power is the most potent as a liquid.6072 It typically coalesces in one place on a planet, forming a perpendicularity. A perpendicularity represents a tremendous amount of power, enough so to pierce all three Realms, allowing people to slide between them.Drominad Examples of such perpendicularities are the Well of Ascension, the Pits of Hathsin, or the Lake.
Sliver
A Sliver is a human intelligence who has held the power and released it.4540 There is a certain threshold of power where one would be considered a Sliver of Adonalsium. Every person on Scadrial has a bit of the power of Preservation, but they are not technically Slivers. Though there is some grey area in what it means to be a Sliver, individuals who have directly held the power of a Shard are usually termed Slivers.4499

  +
As a gas, the Shardic power can take on a number of different functions. Examples of Investiture in gaseous forms include Breath, Stormlight, and Preservation's mists. All can serve as fuel for magic. In both Awakening and Surgebinding, gaseous Investiture is, in fact, the primary source of magic, but even in systems that use other substances, like Allomancy, gaseous Investiture can serve the same purpose.6072
The Lord Ruler held a bit of Preservation at the Well of Ascension and let it go. This altered him, and that residue of a Shard inside him was what scholars would term a Sliver. After Vin gave up Preservation, she was considered a Sliver, as was Kelsier by the end of the Mistborn trilogy. Elantrians are not slivers.4499

Splinter
+
Slivers
  +
Sliver
It is unknown what the exact definition of a Splinter is, but the term seems to refer to a specific kind of fragment of a Shard's power. Unlike Slivers, a Splinter has never been human.4541 Lerasium and atium, despite being condensed essences of their Shards, are not Splinters. One distinguishing factor of a Splinter is that they often have an intent, separate from their Shards'. 10089

  +
A Sliver is a person who has held the power of a Shard, and then released it.4540 This "stretches" a person's spiritweb, noticeably altering them. There is some grey area as to how much power one needs to have to be considered a Sliver; however, a person who directly handled Shardic power is the most straightforward example. The Lord Ruler and Kelsier would both be considered Slivers, while Elantrians and Returned would not.4499
The divine Breath that Returned hold (a Splinter of Endowment)4486, the Aon within a seon (a Splinter of Devotion) and Spren on Roshar (Splinters of Honor)3017 are the only confirmed Splinters. Splinters did not appear in Mistborn Era 1.4541

  +
Splinters
It is not clear how Splinters are formed, though it appears a Shard can actively create one. Endowment seems to be able to form them at will for Returned. Odium traveled to Sel and Splintered Devotion and Dominion. The Letter Since Odium killed Tanavast, twok the Vessel of Honor, Honor is Splintered.9810

  +
Splinter

  +
A Splinter is a fragment of a Shard's power, similar to how a Shard is a fragment of Adonalsium's power. Unlike Slivers or Cognitive Shadows, Splinters don't generally have a Physical component.4541 They often have a mind of their own, separate and distinct from that of their parent Shard.10089 They can form in two distinct ways: either by the Shard being splintered (killed), or by the Shard directly splitting off splinters of itself.4129sa3 Under certain circumstances, a Shard may be split and each resulting piece would gain an aspect of the original Shard's Intent.15990
Shardic Sentience
A Shard's power can create sentience if left around people.9708 Preservation put a fragment of himself into the people on Scadrial, granting them sentience, and the large quantity of Breaths (presumably fragments of Endowment) in Nightblood are a factor in his sentience. Splinters can also gain sentience.1799

  +
Splinters can be comprised of the Investiture of one or more Shards.6454 Examples of splinters include the divine Breath of the Returned,4486 Aons within seons, and spren.3017 It is possible to create a new Shard from splinters of multiple other Shards, though it is much more difficult than it sounds.14145
Relationship with Magic Systems
All magic systems that are currently known are related to Shards. Allomancy is of Preservation, Hemalurgy is of Ruin, and Feruchemy is the balance between the two Shards. AonDor, by name, appears to be related to Devotion. Awakening is of Endowment. Surgebinding is of Honor and Cultivation. The only magic that may not be related to a Shard are Hoid's ability to move from planet to planet, but the mechanics of his powers are not clear.

The types of magics that exist on a world depends on which Shards are present. If Endowment were to move to Scadrial, additional combinations of magics may form.55353005 However, Shards did not create magic systems. Ruin and Preservation did not create the Metallic Arts.5269 Rather, magic is a natural function of the world, a Shard's intent, Realmatic interactions, and sometimes genetics.6072

Though magics are related to a Shard, that does not mean that the effect of a magic is in line with a Shard's intent. For example, Allomancy does things like Pushing and Pulling that don't bring to mind "Preserving" things. Rather, a Shard's intent determines how the magic is obtained, not its effect.4032 In Hemalurgy, the method of gaining magic is spiking and it is inherently destruction, but the effect of the magic actually enhances something else. (This is the more exact, confirmed statement of the Principle of Intent theory).

Magic systems have a focus. Metals are the focus for the Metallic Arts, Aons are the focus for AonDor, and the Commands are the focus for Awakening. The focus seems to be related to Shards themselves, as Ruin and Preservation could not perceive metal. It is not known what determines a focus for a given Shard, or if all Shards are blind to their focus in some way.

Theories and Speculation
theory

Shardic Future Sight
A remarkably simple theory explains why some Shards are better at seeing into the future than others. Cultivation is better at seeing into the future than Honor, and when compared to Preservation, Ruin was remarkably bad at seeing into the future. (After all, if Ruin figured out the Terris Prophecies, he could have simply killed Vin after the events of The Well of Ascension, thus defeating Preservation's plot for a new Vessel and ultimately gaining victory.)

The idea is simple: a Shard's ability to see into the future is determined by the Shard's intent.2713 Ruin is intent that has an immediate effect--Ruin wants to destroy now, not later. Since Ruin is preoccupied with the present, he is particularly bad at seeing into the future. Preservation, on the other hand, is about protection. Protection is a long term thing, so Preservation is more looking into the future, so he is good at seeing into the future. It’s probably for similar reasons why Cultivation is skilled at seeing into the future.

There was significant debate whether Odium could see into the future. People agreed that Odium is more proficient than Ruin at the very least, because having hatred for something would mean that Odium would stop at nothing to exact his goals, even if he had to wait an extremely long period of time. However, Odium is probably not as good as Cultivation or Preservation in this regard, but this still means Odium is much more dangerous than Ruin.

The Shards are not God, but they are pieces of God. Ruin, Preservation, Autonomy, Cultivation, Devotion...There are sixteen of them.

The Shards of Adonalsium, or Shards for short, are sixteen pieces of the power of creation.[2] They are each named after a specific characteristic or ideal that represents the Shard's primary purpose or motivation. A person who has taken up the power of a Shard is the Vessel of that Shard.[3]

The Shards are the most powerful known entities in the cosmere, and for all intents and purposes, serve as the gods of the cosmere. Most if not all magic systems are related to them.

Introduction[edit]

Ruin and Preservation inhabited power and energy in the same way a person inhabits flesh and blood.

Power[edit]

Each Shard is a piece of the power of creation with a specific motivation, such as to destroy or to preserve. Those fragments each began their existence with equal level of power; however, over time many have diminished, whether through conflict or by the act of Investing a world -- imbuing it with Investiture. Each Shard has its own Investiture; while a Shard can co-opt the Investiture of another Shard, that Investiture can become noticeably red.[5]

Investing in a world will produce numerous effects, most notably the creation of a magic system tied to the Shard. While a Shard doesn't have complete control over how the magic system functions or what it does, it can manipulate its mechanics to an extent.[2][6] Moreover, the presence of a Shard leads to the formation of a Perpendicularity, a well of the Shard's Investiture that pierces all three Realms, allowing for worldhopping.[7] The Shard's Investiture can also manifest directly in the world in other ways; examples of such manifestations are atium and lerasium on Scadrial, the Tears of Edgli on Nalthis, or the many spren of Roshar.

It is possible for a Shard to be broken down into multiple smaller Shards with different Intents.[8] It is currently unknown whether this has ever happened before, or how it would be accomplished.

Vessel[edit]

To function properly, a Shard requires a Vessel -- a mind to control it, belonging to a sapient creature from the Physical Realm, such as a human.[9] Currently, there is only one Shard held by a Dragon (Cultivation).[10] One doesn't need to be able to use Investiture in order to become a Vessel, but the ability does help.[11] What becoming a Vessel requires above all is Connection to the Shard in question, whether forged artificially or driven by a natural inclination towards the Shard's intent.[3] Upon Ascension, a Vessel loses its connection to its former species -- for example, a human who Ascended is no longer considered human.[12] However, it is possible for Vessels to reproduce.[13]

The act of becoming a Vessel is called Ascension, and causes the Vessel's body to vaporize and mind to expand.[2] From then on, the Vessel and the Shard are intertwined; the Vessel gets to set some general course of how the Shard's power is defined, and feeds off the Shard's power to remain alive, but the Shard's power is the driving force between the two. Over centuries, the Vessel's mind begins to change to fit the Shard's intent more perfectly.[14][15][16] If a Vessel fights against their Shards intent, they can be left vulnerable.[17] If the Vessel were to give up the Shard, the Shard's influence on their mind would fade over time.[18]

A Shard can be killed by Splintering it, breaking its power down further into smaller pieces, called splinters; the easiest way to achieve that is by killing the mind.[1] The actual death of a Vessel, however, can take up to hundreds of years.[19] If the Shard is taken up before the Vessel dies completely, splintering can be prevented;[1] if not, the power will become wild and dangerous.[20] A Shard without a Vessel will eventually gain sentience.[21] When a Vessel dies, the person's original body materializes and falls to the ground as a corpse.[22] However, it does not age rapidly, since Shardic immortality is different from other methods like atium compounding.[23]

It is possible for Vessels to be separated from their Shards without dying or Splintering the Shards they held.[24][25][26] If this happens, then after the Vessel's death, it is able to resist the pull into the Beyond.[27]

A mentally ill Vessel can affect the Shard's intent.[28]

History[edit]

For the histories of individual Shards, see their respective pages.

I have delved and searched, and have only been able to come up with a single name: Adonalsium. Who, or what, it was, I do not yet know.

It is unknown what precisely Adonalsium was, though it has been referred to numerous times as the power of creation, suggesting it to be the progenitor god of the cosmere. At some point in the distant past, on the planet of Yolen, sixteen people conspired to kill it, and succeeded in an event known as the Shattering of Adonalsium.[1] Some of those people were romantically involved; others were related to each other.[30][31] All of them were mortal at some point.[32]

Following the Shattering, the power that comprised Adonalsium broke into sixteen pieces, each polarized to one particular aspect of it, such as Ruin or Endowment.[33] Those pieces, each equal in power,[34] became known as the Shards. The sixteen killers of Adonalsium each took up one of the Shards, Ascending and becoming the first Vessels.[1] Following their Ascension, each of the Vessels departed Yolen. Some settled on various planets, while others set no roots.[35] At this time they all had an equal amount of power.[34]

Originally, the Shards made an agreement not to interfere with each other,[36] but they did not make a formal oath[37] and many of the Shards chose not to keep to the agreement.[36] Additionally, Honor felt he did not break the agreement by traveling with Cultivation,[38] suggesting the wording of the agreement may not have been as precise as Shards like Endowment thought.

Over the millennia, several Shards have passed away, one way or another. The most common cause of death for them were actions of one specific Shard, Odium, who went on a killing spree, splintering Ambition, Devotion, Dominion and Honor before eventually being trapped in the Rosharan system by the remnants of the latter.[39] The death of Preservation's Vessel, Leras, led to the power being passed between several hands before it was eventually combined with Ruin to form Harmony.[40][41] By contrast, Autonomy spread, creating avatars to inhabit numerous planets, including Obrodai and First of the Sun.[42]

At least one of the Vessels regrets taking up a Shard, though which one that would be is unknown.[43] There are living descendants of some of them still alive.[32] At least one Shard other than Odium has been forced to leave their planet after its destruction.[44]

Known Shards[edit]

There are sixteen original Shards, fifteen of which are currently known.

While most planets have at most one Shard, Sel and Scadrial are both dishardic, hosting two Shards each.[20][45] Roshar, on the other hand, is the only known example of a world influenced by three Shards.[39]

Hybrid Shards[edit]

Several of the known Shards are dead in the current time, with Ambition, Virtuosity, Honor, Devotion and Dominion all being Splintered,[39] with the remnants of Devotion and Dominion having been combined together in the Cognitive Realm as the Dor.[68] Ruin and Preservation, on the other hand, have blended together into Harmony, albeit they remain somewhat separate within this unified construct.[69] It is possible for the remnants of the Shard Honor to merge with Odium to form a new Shard.[70]

Unnamed Shard[edit]

Some men, as they age, grow wiser. I am not one of those, for wisdom and I have always been at cross-purposes, and I have yet to learn the tongue in which she speaks.

Hoid possibly implying the existence of another Shard[74][75]

There remains one Shard that has not been named, but it has an Intent similar to Wisdom or Prudence.[76][77][78] Hoid and this Shard may be antagonistic towards each other,[74][75] though this appears to be something of a common thread in his relations with the original Vessels.[79][80][81] There is a Shard that "just wants to hide and survive,"[82] though it has realized over time that that may not be the most desirable course of action; this may be the "wisdom" Shard.[76][77]

At one point, there was an unknown Shard that does not inhabit a planet,[35] which likely referred to Virtuosity.[83] Similarly, at one point there was at least one unknown Shard that had been Splintered by Odium,[84] though the Splintered Shard Ambition has been revealed since then.

Powers and Abilities[edit]

The power of ancient Adonalsium permeates him. And controls him. Odium is a force like pressure, gravitation, or the movement of time. These things cannot break their own rules. Nor can he.

Shards possess incredible power -- a single Shard can easily move entire planets and alter people down to the genetic level.[86] They exist in all three Realms, but unlike other living beings, the vast majority of their power is concentrated in the Cognitive and Spiritual. Shards do not appear in the Cognitive Realm like other entities (such as a bead on Roshar).[87] Time matters little to Shards, and they can bend and stretch it as they wish.[88]

Vessels also gain an immense amount of knowledge upon Ascending, more than they can process immediately. They can gain more knowledge instantaneously, but this is not automatic, and requires them to consciously gain that knowledge.[89]

As Investiture never truly goes away, a Shard has access to a functionally-endless supply of it; however, there is a finite amount that a Vessel can command at any one time. This means that while all Investiture in the cosmere is assigned to one Shard or another, a Shard cannot truly command all of it at once.[90] As such, while powerful, Shards are not omniscient, omnipresent, nor omnipotent.[91]

A Shard's power can be temporarily diminished, either by assigning it to living creatures (such as people or spren), or sending it back to the Spiritual Realm (e.g. burning atium). Moreover, Shards are, as powers, bound to follow higher rules; a deal, once made by a Shard, cannot be broken, and they must absolutely obey the rules that govern them.[85] Breaking such deals will leave holes in them that another Shard can exploit to kill them.[92][93]

Each Shard appears particularly predisposed toward acting in line with their intent; for example, Preservation finds it nearly impossible to destroy, while it's extremely easy for Ruin to do so.[94] This is partially influenced by the personality change brought about by the Shard.[95] However, whether intentions provide Shards with actual unique powers is unknown.

Individual Powers[edit]

Movement[edit]

Shards are capable of appearing in various parts of their own Invested worlds instantaneously.[40] They can also travel to other planets by willing themselves to do so.[96][97] However, when a Shard Invests its power in a world, it's bound to it and will have difficulty leaving the system it is in.[98] Shards can also trap each other in systems, though the precise mechanics of that are unknown.[99]

Communication[edit]

Shards have several ways of communicating with people. Some Shards can speak directly into the minds of others, while others can listen.[100] A Shard can also communicate with a person directly through dreams or visions, and even take on a physical form -- a puppet of sorts, serving as a Physical outlet for communication.[99][101] While the use of visions and speaking directly into a mind are limited to a single person, a puppet can be seen by many people.[102]

A Shard can also communicate directly with Cognitive Shadows.[103]

Mind Capacity[edit]

Upon Ascension, the Vessel's mind will be greatly expanded, allowing a far greater capacity to think than a mortal could.[104] A Shard is capable of bilocation -- being present in several places at once -- within its sphere of influence.[103] As moments can pass like years to a Shard, they can also appear to think far faster than normal minds. Fundamental understanding of the cosmere, to the point of axi and anti-axi, also comes as a result.[105][89] They seem to possess flawless memory, with no obvious upper limit, as Sazed is able to absorb the tremendous amount of knowledge in his metalminds.[71]

However, contrary to what many believes, Shards are neither omniscient nor omnipresent.[91] They can only appear at limited places at once, and can be distracted, deceived or surprised. It is also possible to block a Shard's senses away from a certain area.[106] They are incapable of breaking a formal contract, at least not without seriously wounding themselves.[93]

Creating Sapience[edit]

Shards can use their power to create complex constructs, capable of continuing their function past the Shard's death. Examples of such constructs are the snapping mists of Preservation,[107] and the vision journal of Honor.[108] Shards can also create sapient beings from their power -- this is most commonly seen on Roshar, with its overabundance of spren. Many of them, like the Stormfather, Nightwatcher, and honorspren were created by local Shards.[109][101]

Shards can also create avatars, personas that can act independently of them.[110] Avatars can be of any gender, race, and species, regardless of the original Vessel creating them, and can be formed at a considerable distance from the main body of the Shard, with many different avatars able to exist on a single planet.[111][58] Though a Shard can create them directly, avatars can also form without a conscious decision on the Shard's part, though the Shard is still aware of what is happening.[110] When created directly, however, they can be instilled with specific traits.[59] Some avatars are self-aware, while others are not, although the parent Shard will always be aware. Though some would call these avatars Splinters, it is not clear whether they truly fit the definition.[112][113]

Avatars are, in a way, considered to be Shards in their own right.[114] Known ones include Patji and the Sand Lord, both of Autonomy.[115][116] It is difficult but possible for someone to become a Vessel of an avatar.[112]

Shardic power is also directly related to sentience and sapience. The close presence of a particular Shard, such as Cultivation, can lead to some beings developing higher levels of sapience.[117] Shardic power can also grant sentience directly -- Scadrians are sapient due to Preservation's power within them, and Nightblood's sapience is partially derived from his large quantity of Breaths. Splinters can also become sapient.[118] Even the raw power of a Shard, if left alone and without a Vessel, will eventually begin to form a rudimentary mind.[20][119]

Magic Generation[edit]

When a Shard Invests a world, it will begin to fuel the local magic system. Each Shard can do this differently, though much of the system is dictated by the planet itself. Because of this connection to the magic, a Shard is able to directly interact with its users and provide Investiture when necessary, without the need for intermediaries.[2]

While not all magic systems in the cosmere are directly tied to a Shard, Shardic presence greatly influences the shape a magic system takes. On a planet inhabited by a Shard, magic forms as a result of the interactions between a Shard's power, Realmatics, the world's natural inclinations and, in some cases, even genetics.[2] For this reason, the exact function magic performs will not always be related to the Shard's nature -- for example, Surgebinding, despite being powered by Honor, is capable of manipulating Division, which controls separating things. However, how the magic is obtained is tied to the Shard.[120] Hemalurgy demands that a person be destroyed, in line with the intent of Ruin, while Surgebinding demands forging bonds.

Shards are capable of tampering with Investiture that does not belong to them.[121]

Future Sight[edit]

This page or section deals with theories or speculation.
Please read carefully and note that this is not necessarily canonical.

It's as if the future is a shattering window. The further you look, the more pieces that window breaks into. The near future can be anticipated, but the distant future… I can only guess.

Shards can perceive the future, although it can be difficult for them. Some are better at it than others, with Cultivation and Preservation being noted as particularly excelling.[108][122] Like all seers, Shards can be wrong about both what they see and how they interpret it, although as a general rule they see further than non-Shards.[123] Shardic power can also be utilized by others to perceive the future as they do: examples of this are atium, as well as the visions of the Returned.[124]

Both Preservation and Honor describe seeing the future as not one set path, but a tangled web of linked possibilities, as well as the circumstances necessary to bring them about, with some being more likely than others. As a result, predicting the future is not a straightforward process, and is not equally useful to all seers. Upon Ascension to Odium, Taravangian realized that there are possibilities of future that Rayse had not seen, implying the future sight ability may be related to the Vessel as well.[104]

Forms and Subdivisions[edit]

I'm still a spren. I’m a little piece of God.

God Metals typically have properties within the Metallic Arts, regardless of what Shard they're aligned with.[2]

Shardic power is the most potent as a liquid.[2] It typically coalesces in one place on a planet, forming a perpendicularity. A perpendicularity represents a tremendous amount of power, enough so to pierce all three Realms, allowing people to slide between them.[126] Examples of such perpendicularities are the Well of Ascension, the Pits of Hathsin, or the Lake.

As a gas, the Shardic power can take on a number of different functions. Examples of Investiture in gaseous forms include Breath, Stormlight, and Preservation's mists. All can serve as fuel for magic. In both Awakening and Surgebinding, gaseous Investiture is, in fact, the primary source of magic, but even in systems that use other substances, like Allomancy, gaseous Investiture can serve the same purpose.[2]

Slivers[edit]

A Sliver is a person who has held the power of a Shard, and then released it.[127] This "stretches" a person's spiritweb, noticeably altering them. There is some grey area as to how much power one needs to have to be considered a Sliver; however, a person who directly handled Shardic power is the most straightforward example. The Lord Ruler and Kelsier would both be considered Slivers, while Elantrians and Returned would not.[128]

Splinters[edit]

A Splinter is a fragment of a Shard's power, similar to how a Shard is a fragment of Adonalsium's power. Unlike Slivers or Cognitive Shadows, Splinters don't generally have a Physical component.[129] They often have a mind of their own, separate and distinct from that of their parent Shard.[130] They can form in two distinct ways: either by the Shard being splintered (killed), or by the Shard directly splitting off splinters of itself.[131][109] Under certain circumstances, a Shard may be split and each resulting piece would gain an aspect of the original Shard's Intent.[8]

Splinters can be comprised of the Investiture of one or more Shards.[132] Examples of splinters include the divine Breath of the Returned,[133] Aons within seons, and spren.[134] It is possible to create a new Shard from splinters of multiple other Shards, though it is much more difficult than it sounds.[135]

A Shard Splintered beyond recognition could be reconstructed as a different Shard, though this would require a great deal of effort and resources, such as the use of a Dawnshard.[136]

Champion[edit]

It is possible for a Shard to name a "champion" when making a deal with another Shard. Becoming a champion in this way is a formal event and requires some kind of contractual agreement.[93][137] Honor encourages Dalinar Kholin to try to get Odium to agree to a contest of champions;[108] Odium eventually agrees and attempts to name Dalinar as his champion, though Dalinar declines.[7] Shards outside of the Rosharan system have also had champions.[138] The Heralds are similar to champions,[139] and the conflicts between Marsh and Elend and between Marsh and Vin are an echo of this system.[137]
