Virtuosity is a Shard of Adonalsium who Splintered herself. The Vessel was an unknown female,[1] she is possibly one of the scholars Hoid questioned about talent.[2]

Intent[edit]

Virtuosity's Intent concerns artistic intent, and artistic talent, and artistic appreciation.[3]

Associated Magics[edit]

Hijo[edit]

Hijo are spirits found on Komashi.[4] They naturally reside underground, and are attracted by thoughts, emotions, and artistic expressions.[4] They are a major part of the lives of people all over Komashi, and are the key to their survival on the planet.[4] They can be bound by a yoki-hijo into useful tools and devices,[5] or be utilized to produce and supply hion.[6] The hijo are related to Komashi's strange geothermal activity, apparently being directly responsible for the intense heating of the ground in the region of Torio.[5]

History[edit]

Like all Shards, Virtuosity was created at the Shattering of Adonalsium and picked up by an unknown Vessel.[7][8] In the millennia that followed, Virtuosity primarily spent her time exploring various artistic expressions throughout the cosmere, and consequently never settled in one location for very long.[9]

At some point, Virtuosity Splintered herself for unknown reasons in the UTol system, in the vicinity of Komashi.[1] Design asserts that the entire region is filled with Splinters of Virtuosity in the wake of this.[4] Hoid believes that her Splintering may have contributed to the odd way UTol is visible through the shroud on Komashi.[1]

Trivia[edit]

  • The word "Virtuosity" is often mistaken to be related to the notion of "virtue". The term actually refers to the characteristics of a virtuoso: someone having outstanding talents or technical abilities, especially in the arts.
  • Brandon considered naming the Shard "Artistry", but felt the name "Virtuosity" fit with other Shard names, like Odium, better.[3]
  • A future book will explore Virtuosity's story.[10]
  • The sacred number of Virtuosity is most likely 13.[11]
  • The Push-Pull theme can be seen in all magic systems, but is most pronounced with Virtuosity's Investiture.[12]
