The glyph for the Surge of Tension

The Surge of Tension is the Surge of Soft Axial Interconnection.

General abilities

Tension can be manipulated to alter the stiffness of an object. The two orders of Knights Radiant with access to this Surge are the Stonewards and the Bondsmiths.[1]

With the Surge, Surgebinders are able to take something flexible and make it rigid.[2] Tension is highly resisted by Investiture and even a small amount of Stormlight in an object would prevent it from working.[3]

Stoneward abilities

For Stonewards, the use of this Surge is different from the Bondsmiths. Stonewards use this ability to shape stone in battle.[4]

Bondsmith abilities

For Bondsmiths, the use of this Surge is different from the Stonewards. Bondsmiths use it to repair inanimate objects as a complement to the Surge of Adhesion.[4]

Merging the Realms

Bondsmiths able to use the Surges of Adhesion and Tension to recreate Honor's perpendicularity by merging the Physical, Cognitive and Spiritual Realms. This allows them to pour out Stormlight and give it to gems or Radiants, as if in a highstorm.[5] This also lets spren manifest fully in the Physical Realm.[citation needed] This process is done by 'slamming' both hands that are 'leashing' the Cognitive and Spiritual Realms together, and was referred to by Odium as 'Ascending'.[6] Whether this can be used in another Realm beyond the Physical is undetermined. This ability was not possible while Tanavast still lived; the Stormfather also stated that Dalinar is the only Bondsmith to have ever achieved this.
