The glyph for the Surge of Adhesion

The Surge of Adhesion is the Surge of Pressure and Vacuum.

General abilities

Adhesion can be used to bind things together.[1] The two orders of Knights Radiant with access to this Surge are the Bondsmiths and the Windrunners.[2] Honorspren and windspren are also able to use a rudimentary form of the Surge.[3]

Full Lashing

This ability creates an extremely powerful temporary bond between two objects. To use this ability, the Surgebinder infuses a surface with Stormlight, after which any object or person that comes in contact with the surface will be bound to it. Full Lashing does not necessarily require skin contact; surfaces can be infused by "spraying" the Stormlight onto them.[4] Most objects would break apart themselves before the bond holding them would.[1] The duration of this bond is determined by the amount of Stormlight infused. The bond ends when the Stormlight runs out.

A Full Lashing can be powerful enough to bend the path of bullets.[5] Someone wearing Shardplate is immune to Lashings, but any objects that they are touching can be affected.[6] The bond also attracts bindspren.[7]

Windrunner abilities

The Windrunners use the Surges of Adhesion and Gravitation. The combination of these two Surges resulted in the three Lashings.[4][2] Using a combination of the two Surges, a Windrunner could theoretically exit orbit.[8]

Bondsmith abilities

Spiritual Adhesion

Using the Surge of Adhesion to manipulate spiritual, rather than purely physical forces, a Bondsmith can touch another person and forge a spiritual Connection between them. This allows the Bondsmith to temporarily speak whatever languages this other person can speak.[9] Whether the Bondsmith  must remain physically close to this other person for the ability to be continually used or if it can transfer any other skill or knowledge is unknown. The power bears a great similarity to other applications of Connection such as duralumin Feruchemy on Scadrial.[10]

Merging the Realms

Bondsmiths able to use the Surges of Adhesion and Tension to recreate Honor's perpendicularity by merging the Physical, Cognitive and Spiritual Realms. This allows them to pour out Stormlight and give it to gems or Radiants, as if in a highstorm.[11] This also lets spren manifest fully in the Physical Realm.[citation needed] This process is done by 'slamming' both hands that are 'leashing' the Cognitive and Spiritual Realms together, and was referred to by Odium as 'Ascending'.[12] Whether this can be used in another Realm beyond the Physical is undetermined. This ability was not possible while Tanavast still lived; the Stormfather also stated that Dalinar is the only Bondsmith to have ever achieved this.
