Ideals of the Edgedancers

The Ideals of the Knights Radiant, also known as the Immortal Words, are a set of rules by which the Radiants lived. The First Ideal is shared by all of the orders, and is used as a motto for the Knights Radiant as a whole. Each of the orders then has an additional four Ideals that are unique to that order. The Ideals of the Order of Edgedancers all focus on remembering and advocating for ordinary people.[3]

The First Ideal

Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination.

—The First Ideal of the Knights Radiant[4]

The Second Ideal

I will remember those who have been forgotten.

—The Second Ideal of the Edgedancers, as sworn by Lift[5]

The Third Ideal

I will listen to those who have been ignored.

—The Third Ideal of the Edgedancers, as sworn by Lift[6]

Abilities

The Edgedancers use the Surges of Abrasion and Progression.

The Surge of Progression allows them to make plants or other organic objects grow much faster than normal. They can also heal, though the extent of this ability is unknown, it seems that the wielder is even able to heal others from wounds suffered from Shardblades.

The Surge of Abrasion grants them the ability to manipulate friction. They can apply this in different ways; they can make their feet nearly frictionless, they can escape any grasp, or grip the slickest walls.

They have been described, poetically, as being able "to ride the thinnest rope at speed, dance across rooftops, and move through a battlefield like a ribbon on the wind."[5]

Lift, the only specific example of an Edgedancer given thus far in the series, has the unique ability to extract Stormlight from food through an ability granted by the Nightwatcher.

History

Edgedancer oaths are themed around remembering the ordinary people of the world—those who aren’t powerful generals or Radiants. Too often, the actions of the powerful have terrible effects on the people with no voice, and the Edgedancers consider it their solemn duty to remember that the people are the ones they truly serve.[3]

The Edgedancers are known as being caring and graceful. Among the Knights Radiant, they see it as their duty to care for the people and are often less interested in war than they are about trying to improve the daily lives of the common folk, and would ignore things of great import in favor of smaller things, as some would see it.[5] Often, a mid-sized town would have an Edgedancer or two on permanent assignment, where they’d use Regrowth to provide healing and would work for the common good of the town.[3]

Edgedancers tend to be among the more religious of Radiants and are the Order where you’re most likely to find former religious leaders who end up bonding a spren. During wartime, they often act as the mobile medics, eschewing actual combat to heal or pull out the wounded or those trapped in terrible situations. However, there are some renowned for their graceful and skilled prowess in combat, occasionally used as scouts or special forces troops in conjunction with a team of Windrunners or Skybreakers. One should never assume the Edgedancers are in any way base just because they often ignore high society; they are renowned as some of the most refined, elegant, and graceful of Radiants[7]. Considered elegant things of beauty[5].[3]

Quotes

When Simol was informed of the arrival of the Edgedancers, a concealed consternation and terror, as is common in such cases, fell upon him; although they were not the most demanding of orders, their graceful, limber movements hid a deadliness that was, by this time, quite renowned; also, they were the most articulate and refined of the Radiants.

The Edgedancers are too busy relocating the tower's servants and farmers to send a representative to record their thoughts in these gemstones.

I'll do it for them, then. They are the ones who will be most displaced by this decision. The Radiants will be taken in by nations, but what of all these people now without homes?

Trivia

  • If he had joined the Knights Radiant, Wayne would most likely have been in the Order of Edgedancers. Most of the Orders would look very strangely upon Wayne.[9]
