Dabbid was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, which resulted in an unspecified disorder. He did not begin speaking until he was six years old, and often got into trouble because he did things other people wouldn't normally do. When he was young, he put a rope around his neck to feel what it was like to be born the way he was. When people found him, Dabbid didn't understand why they were worried as he wasn't going to hurt himself. At some point, his mother died, causing his disorder to worsen. Dabbid then ended up at the War of Reckoning, washing the clothes of a lighteyes. The man's wife accused him of fathering her darkeyed child in order to protect her lover, and Dabbid was assigned to be a bridgeman in Sadeas' warcamp as punishment.sa4
During Kaladin’s first run as bridgeleader, he found Dabbid curled up with his arm twisted at an awkward angle. Kaladin charged to reach him, but Dabbid didn’t even notice him when Kaladin arrived. Dabbid was in shock, his eyes dazed. Kaladin dragged Dabbid to the edge, trying to pick him up, but his muscles failing him. Rock actually came and helped Kaladin carry Dabbid to the safety of the hollow. After trying to save Gadol and treating Leyten and Hobber’s injuries, Kaladin set Dabbid’s arm using some arrows and Dabbid’s own shirt.sa1

Bridge Four
The next day, Kaladin went to check on the wounded, including Dabbid. The bridgeman still looked much as he had the day before, staring forward, his eyes unfocused. Hobber told Kaladin that he had been like that all night. Kaladin snapped his fingers in front of Dabbid’s eyes, causing the latter to jump at the sound and follow Kaladin’s fingers. Hobber thought he’d been hit in the head, but Kaladin hoped it was just battle shock that would wear off eventually.sa1

In 1173, Dabbid joined Bridge Four, Kaladin's bridgecrew. The crew was expected to charge the Parshendi line unarmored to draw their fire and push a bridge across the chasm providing a path for Sadeas' army. On one run, Dabbid was all but trampled by a horse from his own side, causing him to fall to the ground, dazed and with a broken arm. While Dabbid expected to die on the battlefield, Kaladin and Rock dragged him to safety. After treating those with more serious wounds, Kaladin set Dabbid's arm with a splint made of Parshendi arrows and Dabbid's shirt.sa1
Finding purpose in Bridge Four
Dabbid’s arm eventually healed, but he still didn’t talk. He followed the others, but he had been so profoundly shocked during battle that he didn’t talk. Kaladin worried that the man would never recover from his mind fatigue. However, Dabbid eventually began to assist Lopen, who referred to him as “moolie," in bringing water to the bridgemen on runs.sa1

Dabbid remained in a state of shock long after the battle, jumping at sounds, but otherwise unresponsive. Sadeas refused to pay or feed any bridgeman that was unable to go on runs, so Dabbid survived off of food Bridge Four bought by selling knobweed sap they secretly gathered while collecting stones.sa1sa1 Dabbid’s arm eventually healed, and he was able to follow others around, but he still didn’t talk; others worried that he would never recover from his battle shock. When the men began training with spears, Dabbid stood off to the side, staring at nothing in particular. Shen would stand beside him, hesitant. Rock quickly realized that training Lopen, Dabbid, and Shen would not work and he brought them back to Kaladin. Instead, Kaladin had the four of them retrieve items from corpses with the assistance from Syl that way the others could train faster.sa1

Bridge Four was later sentenced to regularly scavenge the chasms as punishment for having a high survival rate. Dabbid is an Alethi member of Bridge Four on Roshar.

Appearance and Personality[edit]

Dabbid is a wiry,[1] youthful-looking man,[2] younger than Kaladin.[3] His features are Alethi, but his skin is on the paler side.[1]

He feigned being a mute to avoid Bridge Four recognizing his mental deficiency. He is nevertheless, still traumatized by the events of the bridge runs.[3][4]

History[edit]

Early Life[edit]

Dabbid was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, which resulted in an unspecified disorder. He did not begin speaking until he was six years old, and often got into trouble because he did things other people wouldn't normally do. When he was young, he put a rope around his neck to feel what it was like to be born the way he was. When people found him, Dabbid didn't understand why they were worried as he wasn't going to hurt himself. At some point, his mother died, causing his disorder to worsen. Dabbid then ended up at the War of Reckoning, washing the clothes of a lighteyes. The man's wife accused him of fathering her darkeyed child in order to protect her lover, and Dabbid was assigned to be a bridgeman in Sadeas' warcamp as punishment.[4]

Bridge Four[edit]

In 1173, Dabbid joined Bridge Four, Kaladin's bridgecrew. The crew was expected to charge the Parshendi line unarmored to draw their fire and push a bridge across the chasm providing a path for Sadeas' army. On one run, Dabbid was all but trampled by a horse from his own side, causing him to fall to the ground, dazed and with a broken arm. While Dabbid expected to die on the battlefield, Kaladin and Rock dragged him to safety. After treating those with more serious wounds, Kaladin set Dabbid's arm with a splint made of Parshendi arrows and Dabbid's shirt.[3]

Dabbid remained in a state of shock long after the battle, jumping at sounds, but otherwise unresponsive. Sadeas refused to pay or feed any bridgeman that was unable to go on runs, so Dabbid survived off of food Bridge Four bought by selling knobweed sap they secretly gathered while collecting stones.[2][5] Dabbid’s arm eventually healed, and he was able to follow others around, but he still didn’t talk; others worried that he would never recover from his battle shock. Dabbid eventually began to assist Lopen, who referred to him as “moolie" (meaning "mute"), in bringing waterskins and first aid supplies on runs.[6]

Bridge Four was later sentenced to regularly scavenge the chasms as punishment for having a high survival rate. Kaladin used this as an opportunity to secretly train the bridgemen to fight so they could escape Sadeas' warcamp. While the others were practicing, Dabbid, along with Rock, Lopen, and Shen, who could not fight for various reasons, continued to recover valuables in order to meet their quota and avoid suspicion. Syl was able to fly ahead and quickly lead them to corpses that had not been scavenged so the four men could do the work usually done by a whole crew.[7] On later bridgeruns, Dabbid and Lopen covertly retrieved large amounts of money and Parshendi armor that had been collected from the chasms and secured to the underside of one of the permanent bridges. Bridge Four was able to use the armor to enrage the Parshendi and draw their fire, reducing the bridgecrew's mortality rate even further.[8]

On Dabbid's final bridgerun, Sadeas abandoned Dalinar's army mid-battle and left them to die. While Bridge Four had the opportunity to escape, they instead decided to help the Kholin army retreat. After Kaladin used a large amount of stormlight to protect his men from a volley of arrows and went into shock, Dabbid joined the rest of the bridgecrew to complete the approach.[9] Bridge Four was able to rescue Dalinar and in return he bought their freedom by giving Sadeas his shardblade.[10]

Dalinar's Forces[edit]

After being recruited by Dalinar Kholin, Kaladin assigned Dabbid and Shen to help Lopen assist Rock in feeding other bridgemen.[11]

During the Battle of Narak, Dabbid is left behind at the warcamp alongside Lopen, Hobber, and Moash, to look after the barracks and assist Kaladin in his recovery.[12] After the battle, Bridge Four relocated to Urithiru where Dabbid helped Rock in the kitchen. While Dabbid still doesn’t talk, he made up for it with stirring and running waterskins. He had actually become sort of an unofficial mascot for Bridge Four with the others saluting him when they pass. Upon seeing the smoke to the west after Hobber’s miracle, Bridge Four charged with their bridge towards it. Once the bridge was in place and they ran across, Dabbid and Lopen unhooked the shields and spears and tossed one to each of the bridgemen.[13]

Despite being the unofficial mascot of Bridge Four, Dabbid was still unable to draw in Stormlight, something he shared with Rlain.[14] While the others never spoke it, Rlain saw the truth in the reactions of the other bridgemen, that it was probably best that him and Dabbid remain without Stormlight.[15]

Occupation of Urithiru[edit]

At some point while living in Urithiru, the Sibling reached out to establish a connection to Dabbid. The Sibling asked Dabbid to switch a spanreed gem to communicate with Navani. Dabbid gets caught making the switch.[1] During interrogation, one of Navani's guards identifies him as a member of Bridge 4. When the Singer invasion begins, Dabbid shows Navani which strata to touch to talk to the Sibling directly.[16]

As the occupations continues Dabbid becomes the go between for Navani and Kaladin. The Sibling is able to guide Dabbid to Kaladin's hiding spot in the higher floors to deliver broth.[17] He also delivers the elevator gauntlet fabrial and infused gemstones from Navani.[18] As Kaladin goes to skirmish with Lezian at the well, Dabbid says his first words since the disastrous bridge run: "Life before Death".[19] After the skirmish Dabbid is able to meet up with Rlain to wake Kaladin up from his comatose state.[20]
