Adrotagia is the head of King Taravangian's scholars on Roshar.[1]

Appearance & Personality

Adrotagia is an old Kharbranthian woman.[1] She has been described as exhibiting various aging-related conditions such as liver spots, large eye bags around her green eyes, and wispy, silvery hair.[2][3]

Despite Adrotagia's age, she is still keen-minded enough to handle her various scholarly duties, including doing research to help interpret and decipher the puzzles of the Diagram.[4][5] As one Taravangian's most trusted advisors, she is one of the few people who knows of the king's fluctuating intelligence and even attempts to measure it, plotting a graph proving his random level of intelligence follows a normal distribution curve.[1]

Adrotagia also presumably helps with interpreting the Death Rattles, which were used to augment the Diagram.[1] She keeps in contact with Joshor and Dova, who collects these Death Rattles. Adrotagia also keeps track of the various Unmade on Roshar like Moelach (for the Death Rattles) and Nergaoul.[3][1]

As a scholar who is also an unbeliever, Adrotagia disapproves of people relying on faith rather than evidence.[1][6] Nonetheless, she still retains some Vorin habits like burning a glyphward each morning for her deceased husband. She shows ruthlessness in seeing the goals of the Diagram achieved even when they involve murder, even disapproving of Taravangian's emotional outburst at the sight of dead soldiers during one of his days of mediocre intelligence but high compassion[1]. Despite this, Adrotagia still follows some sort of moral compass. She even objects to the idea of killing innocent children, calling Taravangian a monster for ordering so during one of his extremely intelligent but conceited days.[7]

History

Adrotagia grew up as a close personal friend of Taravangian,[1] presumably in Kharbranth. She refers to him by his boyhood nickname of Vargo and he calls her Adro, even as adults. At some point, Adrotagia was married, although her husband later died; she still burns a glyphward for him each day. At some unknown point, Taravangian took Adrotagia into his confidence, telling her about his visit to the Nightwatcher, construction of the Diagram, and his use of Death Rattles. Adrotagia helped him to study these things and make sense of what they signify.[4][5]

Adrotagia, along with Mrall accompanied Taravangian to Jah Keved in the wake of the Jah Keved war of succession.[1] The three of them went among the Veden soldiers, comforting them, and she was present when Szeth returned to confront Taravangian about the Surgebinding he had seen Kaladin perform. After Szeth was sent on his way, Adrotagia accompanied Taravangian when he spoke to King Valam in his final moments.
