Ardents are priests of Vorinism in Roshar.[1] Since the Hierocracy the ardents have been forbidden from participating in politics, owning possessions, and are themselves the property of Lighteyes. Like Parshmen, ardents are not paid for work. They are the only people allowed to use the Almighty's other name Elithanathile or He Who Transforms. Many male ardents had shaved heads and long beards, most ardents dress in grey robes.

Ardents are exempt from many customs in Alethkar, especially gender-specific customs. Female ardents are not required to cover their safehand and are allowed to eat both masculine and feminine foods. Male ardents can learn to read and pursue other feminine arts.

Notable Ardents

  • Kabsal A male ardent who lived in Kharbranth[2] and attempted to assassinate Jasnah.[3]
  • Geranid A female ardent who lived on a small Reshi island and studied Spren.[4]
  • Ashir A male ardent, Geranid's husband, who studies chemistry through cooking.[4]
  • Kadash A male ardent, head of the ardents under Dalinar’s household. He is a former elite solider who became an ardent after he witnessed the events at the Rift.[5]
  • Zahel The warrior ardent who teaches Adolin, Renarin and Kaladin swordmanship and how to fend off a shardbearer.[6]

Soulcasting

Ardents are the only people allowed to use Soulcasting in Alethkar, and surround the practice with mystery carrying out Soulcastings at night and under heavy guard to prevent the general public from viewing them. Ardents are, however, not allowed to use Soulcasters on people. Ardents who use Soulcasters where red robes, instead of the usual grey. At least one ardent is shown to be undergoing savanthood, as seen by his crystalline eyes and sking that is described as looking like stone, with small cracks. This is most likely due to him repeatedly Soulcasting stone barracks from the air for use in the warcamps.
