Ty is a Skybreaker squire under the Skybreaker masters Ki and Warren.
He competes against Szeth in a martial competence test over the Purelake, to test their ability with their surges. The squires have to throw bags of coloured powder at each other and avoid being hit. During the test he notices Szeth is winning and leads a group of squires to focus on him. They pelt Szeth with bags, and he runs out of Stormlight, landing in the Purelake just before the test ends. Ty then argues that he won after it was announced that Szeth won via a loophole; he was cleaned of colour by swimming in the Purelake.[1]
