Gaz has a beard, but his face is scarred so it only grows in patches. He has a single brown eye and does not wear an eyepatch over his missing one. He is described as being very short for an Alethi man.

Gaz is a greedy man who, like most bullies, quickly backs down when confronted. For some reason he has to pay back debts to Lamaril. He is among the more antagonistic towards Kaladin, often taking special delight in attempting to kill off Bridge Four. He does, however, accept Kaladin's bribes so that Kaladin can stay in control of Bridge Four.

He disappears after one of the bridgeruns which is revealed to be because of desertion.

Shallan encounters Gaz with a group of deserters in the Frostlands. She vows to give them pardons upon returning to the Shattered Plains if they accompany her there. Shallan's respectful treatment of Gaz improves his attitude towards his position and makes him extremely loyal to her. Upon returning to the Shattered Plains he receives his pardon and gains a permanent position as one of Shallan's bodyguards.
