Gaz is a disreputable soldier on the Shattered Plains of Roshar. He is from Farcoast and is a darkeyes of the sixth nahn.[1]

He is the sergeant in charge of the bridge crews in Sadeas's warcamp.[2]

Appearance and Personality

Gaz has a beard, but his face is scarred so it only grows in patches. He is described as being very short for an Alethi man. He has a single brown eye and does not wear an eyepatch over his missing eye.[2] This changes at some point after his desertion; when Shallan meets him he is described as wearing an eyepatch. The lack of an eye bothers him greatly, as his reduced field of view makes him fear for what is in his blind spot. This makes him act somewhat paranoid and worry about his surroundings.[3]

Gaz is a greedy man who, like most bullies, quickly backs down when confronted.

History

For some reason he has to pay back debts to Lamaril, and the rates are so high that he can only manage to repay Lamaril by using the bribes that Kaladin gave him.[3] He is among the more antagonistic towards Kaladin, often taking special delight in attempting to kill off Bridge Four. He does, however, accept Kaladin's bribes so that Kaladin can stay in control of Bridge Four.

He disappears after one of the bridgeruns,[4] which is revealed to be because of desertion. Later, Hashal takes care to deflect any of Kaladin's questions regarding where he went to, as she did not want the bridgemen to know that even their superior had deserted.

Shallan encounters Gaz with a group of deserters in the Frostlands. She vows to give them pardons upon returning to the Shattered Plains if they accompany her there. Shallan's respectful treatment of Gaz improves his attitude towards his position and makes him extremely loyal to her. Upon returning to the Shattered Plains he receives his pardon and gains a permanent position as one of Shallan's bodyguards.
