Tanalan is the lord of Rathalas. He has violet eyes and a nasally accent that is typical for the region.[3]
At the age of seven he witnesses his father die at the hands of Dalinar Kholin. Dalinar had been given orders by his brother Gavilar to also kill Tanalan, however, Dalinar instead lets him and his mother escape. Nine years later, Tanalan returns to Rathalas to take his place as city lord. He demands the return of his fathers shardblade, Oathbringer and heads the rebellion of the city against the Kholin regime.
