He owned and operated a book shop with his wife, and sold a number of books to Shallan when she was making another attempt to impress Jasnah Kholin. A friend of Shallan's, Yalb, created a ruse to force him to lower his prices by claiming Barmest, a rival merchant, had offered her a much lower price. The ruse worked, with Artmyrn cursing Barmest as he sold the books to Shallan for a reduced price.
Shallan suspected that unlike most men, Artmyrn was literate, but was not crass enough to show it where customers could see.
