The coming of the True Desolation, the Everstorm, or the Night of Sorrows over Roshar was predicted a few times in The Way of Kings.

Lore

Mankind feared the Desolations though the Last Desolation happened 4,500 years ago and very little knowledge about these events had survived.

Dalinar's visions

According to words collected by the Silent Gatherers Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; refs with no name must have content the Everstorm comes either within or exactly 1000 days from the first day of Palah of the month Shash of the year 1171. Given that n year is 500 days in Roshar, this would place the coming of the Everstorm at around the same date in the year 1173.[disputed]

Epigraph

The True Desolation was mentioned in the Epigraph to Chapter 5 in The Way of Kings.

I have seen the end, and have heard it named. The Night of Sorrows, the True Desolation. The Everstorm.

Talenel'Elin

Talenel was the only Herald that died during the Last Desolation and was forced to go back to Damnation. The other nine Heralds thought him enough to uphold the Oathpact and thus end the cycle of Desolations.

He appeared in Kholinar and claimed that he had failed to uphold the Oathpact. He then fell to the ground, unconscious.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; refs with no name must have content

Who am I? I ... I am Talenel'Elin, Stonesinew, Herald of the Almighty. The Desolation has come. Oh, God ... it has come. And I have failed.
