Because of the continuous skirmishes at Alethkar's borders he was in permanent need of new soldiers. Eventually he came through Hearthstone for recruitment. Hearthstone's citylord Roshone -- apparently Amaram's distant cousin -- committed Tien to be a recruit what resulted in Kaladin's volunteering due to his wish to protect Tien though Amaram promised Lirin to stint Tien's duty to be a messenger boy.Cite error: Invalid <ref>
