The Order of Truthwatchers was an order of the Knights Radiant on Roshar.

The Truthwatchers were Surgebinders who used the two Surges Illumination and Progression, and they absorbed Stormlight from gems. It is very likely that they also used a Nahel bond.

Historical

The Truthwatchers were people that were silent and secretive most of the time.

They were also considered to have an esoteric nature.

Known Truthwatchers

Renarin Kholin has claimed to be a Truthwatcher. Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; refs with no name must have content

Ym is believed to be a Truthwatcher, though this is unconfirmed.

Ideals of the Truthwatchers

The Ideals of the Knights Radiant, also known as the Immortal Words, are a set of rules by which the Knights Radiant lived. The First Ideal, identical for all orders of the Knights Radiant, is used as their motto. Each order of the Knights Radiant had additional four ideals that were unique to each order.

The First Ideal

Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination.

Truthwatchers and the Surges of Illumination & Progression

The Truthwatchers use the Surges of Progression and Illumination.

Progression was used by Ym to heal a small boy's foot of infection in words of Radiance pgs 173-174, and by Lift (an Edgedancer) to revive and heal Gawx after his throat was slit in WOR pgs 704-705. Lift also used it to cause seeds to grow suddenly into plants. It is described in the ARS Arcanum at the end of WOR as "The surge of Growth and Healing, or Regrowth".

Illumination is used by Shallan (a Lightweaver) to craft illusions by weaving light, sound and various waveforms. She uses this to disguise herself (often as Veil, though sometimes as others), make herself appear cleaner, older and more attractive, to create illusions of walls and rocks to hide behind and in, and to create an illusion of herself in the distance doing something (getting the ghostbloods orders and as a distraction for the chasm fiend).

Renarin saw the Everstorm coming even though he had no line of sight on it (WOR pg 1019) said that he could see the future (WOR pg 1019) though he incorrectly predicted the death of himself and those around him (same pg and pg 1028). He also later stated that Truthwatchers are unique because they "see" (WOR pg 1073)

Quotes

Now, as the Truthwatchers were esoteric in nature, their order being formed entirely of those who never spoke or wrote of what they did, in this lies frustration for those who would see their exceeding secrecy from the outside; they were not naturally inclined to explanation; and in the case of Corberon's disagreements, their silence was not a sign of exceeding abundance of disdain, but rather and exceeding abundance of tact.
