Chapter 1

Characters
Plot Summary

Alanik stands on the branch of the Stadium Tree, watching a sporting event take place. Six ships are on each team, one team playing for the Unity faction and one team for the Independence. Alanik’s mentor is there, Rinakin, who is the leading member of the Independence party. They discuss ReDawn politics, worried about the growing Unity faction. A hologram message from Nanalis comes on, the Council President of the ReDawn Council. She congratulates the athletes, then goes on to say that their enemies are the ones who seek to divide ReDawn, referring to the Independence faction. She ends the message, saying that hopefully the enemy will be silenced. As Unity begins to catch back up to Independence in the game, Rinakin and Alanik leave on a transport ship. They go to Industry, one of the biggest trees on ReDawn. Quilan, one of the Unity cytonics, speaks in Alanik’s mind, telling her to meet him at the Council Tree.

Chapter 2

Characters
Plot Summary

Alanik decides not to meet with the council on their terms. There are four other cytonics at the Council Tree, and could together form a cytonic inhibitor to prevent Alanik from using her abilities there. She tells Quilan that she will not be meeting with the Council. She contemplates the Superiority’s controlling nature, and worries about Unity’s aggressive actions. Her and Alanik decide that they need allies to help them resist Unity. Rinakin suggests possibly reaching out to the humans for aid. Rinakin says that the Superioirty suspects that the UrDail are working with the humans, and that they need to turn over the humans that they are harboring.

They approach Spindle, a smaller tree, and are greeted by a government ship and Quilan tells Alanik that he’s come to escort them to the Council Tree. Quilan tells them that there’s no need for things to get aggressive. Alanik searches through the Nowhere, trying to find Detritus. She can’t reach it, discovering that they have a cytonic inhibitor, though she senses Jorgen’s mind. They land and are greeted by Quilan, who strikes Rinakin with a cytonic concussion bolt.

Chapter 3

Characters
Plot Summary

Two security guards grab Rinakin, and bring him into the hold of Quilan’s ship. She tries to hyperjump to Rinakin to rescue him, but finds that she can’t. She realizes that they have a cytonic inhibitor onboard, and sees two Superiority diones. This means that Unity is already cooperating directly with the Superiority. Alanik is still in her ship, and prepares to escape. She overhears a cytonic communication from Council, saying that Unity is going to turn her and Rinakin over to the Superiority. She tries to fire her thrusters, but finds that Quilan has latched on to her ship with a light hook. Quilan tries to hit her with a concussion bolt, but Alanik ducks. She reaches out to the coordinates of the Independence base on Hollow, and hyperjumps there. She sees several Unity pilots, realizing that they have already taken the base. She tries to reach out to the Unity ship she sees, but it has a Superiority inhibitor on it as well.

Alanik reaches out through the nowhere to Jorgen, and he responds. She asks him for the cytonic key to their inhibitor so that she can hyperjump to Detritus. He doesn’t know how to give it to her, and she tells him to think about allowing her to come there. Their minds connect, and Alanik finds the cytonic key. She forms the coordinates in her mind and hyperjumps to Detritus.

Chapter 4

Plot Summary

Alanik hyperjumps into a hallway on Platform Prime, sensing an unusual amount of cytonic energy. She communicates cytonically with Jorgen, and meets with him and FM in private. They have several taynix with them, and Alanik notices that they are hyperjumping. Alanik tells them that some of her people have allied themselves with the Superioirty, and that she wants to strike up an alliance between the Independance faction and Detritus. Jorgen tells her that he doesn’t have the authority to made that decision, and that she’ll have to talk to their leaders, including Jeshua. Alanik is confused by why the cytonics aren’t more key in the decision making, but agrees to meet with Jeshua and Cobb.

Chapter 5

Plot Summary

Alanik waits with FM and her taynix as Jorgen goes to talk to Detritus’ leaders. Alanik asks her questions about the taynix, and FM explains more about them. Jorgen radios that they are ready. As Alanik and FM walk to the command room, she thinks about how cramped the buildings there are, as opposed to the taller and larger structures on ReDawn. She meets with multiple humans in the command room, including Jeshua, Cobb, and Cuna. Alanik tells them that she knows that the taynix are hyperdrives, but covers for FM and Jorgen by saying that the UrDail already knew. Jeshua asks what Alanik wants, and she responds that they should work together against their common enemy, the Superiority. Alanik offers to teach their cytonics, and to share UrDail knowledge on the Superiority and other matters. In return, she asks for an alliance between the humans and the Independence faction of ReDawn. She proposes that the humans send a force to an Independence base to help resist against the Unity faction. Cobb likes the idea, but Jeshua says that they are using all of their resources to defend against Superiority forces. Cobb and Jeshua disagree on wether the National Assembly or the DDF should have authority over the decision, but Cuna suggests that Alanik be given quarters where she could wait.

She is shocked when she learns that Boomslug can use mindblades. The others discuss the conflict between the National Assembly and the DDF, and Alanik listens. Alanik warns them that if they strike a deal with the Superiority, then they’ll lose their autonomy and free will.

Cobb arrives, saying that her request for military aid has been denied by the National Assembly but that she may stay on Detritus as a refugee. Cobb reveals that the National Assembly has been negotiating with the Superiority, which is greatly concerning to Jorgen, FM, and Alanik. Cobb tells them that his hands are tied, then tells them that he can’t command Skyward Flight to go and help Alanik on ReDawn. He heavily hints that he can’t officially order them to go, but wants them to anyway. Alanik and the others file out of the room and towards their starships.
