Endowment is one of the sixteen Shards of Adonalsium. The Shard's Vessel is Edgli.[1] She is located on Nalthis and is the only Shard present on that world.[2]

Associated Magic

Endowment's magic system is Awakening, which matches its intent: Breath can be gifted (endowed) to others, and also used to impart "life" to inanimate objects.

Endowment is responsible for the Returned.[3] A Splinter of Endowment known as a divine Breath is what resurrects the Returned and grants them their abilities.[4]

History

Creation

No good can come of two Shards settling in one location. It was agreed that we would not interfere with one another, and it disappoints me that so few of the Shards have kept to this original agreement.

—Endowment[5]

The Shard of Endowment was created, like all others, at the Shattering of Adonalsium, and picked up by Edgli.[1] Eventually, she settled in Nalthian system.

Letters to Hoid

Endowment wrote the first Oathbringer letter to Hoid. She believes that Rayse is not a threat and is unsympathetic to the deaths of Aona and Skai, as they had broken their pact.

The Tears of Edgli

This page or section deals with theories or speculation.
Please read carefully and note that this is not necessarily canonical.

The Tears of Edgli are a special flower that grows only in Hallandren[6] that come in a variety of colors and are more efficient when used as a source of color for Awakening.[7] They are related to Endowment,[8] and their connection to Awakening suggests they may contain some of her Investiture.

Trivia

  • She is fine with her Breath being used to feed the Returned.[9]
  • The Shard of Endowment is the one Hoid would have taken if he wanted a Shard.[10] It might also be the one Brandon Sanderson would take.[11]
  • In the Well of Ascension's original ending, Endowment was one of many Shards which saved Sazed from Marsh.[12]
