Trellium, also known as bavadinium, is the God Metal of Autonomy.
Trellium is the metal used by Paalm to hide from Harmony's sight and evade capture. The metal is from a Shard of Adonalsium currently known in the cosmere but which particular Shard is unknown.6261 The metal is not known to Harmony. The name is in reference to the force currently known only as Trell on Scadrial, and the metal is associated with that "god", theorized to be a shard.8554

Hemalurgic Constructs
Presumably, it is a god metal of one of the other sixteen Shards of Adonalsium, but certainly could be an alloy. It is not known which of the sixteen Trell is (or if he even is one). It is reasonable to say it is not Devotion, Dominion, or Honor as they are splintered. The metal is not of Endowment.4389 That leaves Autonomy, Cultivation, and Odium. Cultivation seems quite enraptured in the happenings of her world. It would be reasonable to guess that Trell is actually Odium considering his history with splintering other shards/working against them on a grand scale. Furthermore, the red eyes of Trell's shapeshifting agents, one of which sought out Edwarn Ladrian in his prison cell in order to silence him, may hint at a connection or similarity to Odium's influence on Roshar, where people touched by his power tend to exhibit red eyes of varying shades. If Trell truly is Odium, Raysium would be a more appropriate name for the metal. On the other hand, as the metal allows its user to be autonomous of Harmony's control, it could also be of Autonomy, in which case a more appropriate name for the metal would be Bavadinium. Another aspect that would support this theory is that Autonomy/Bavadin, in her Letter to Hoid, has mentioned her tendency to form new Avatars of her Shardic Influence on other planets, as this is revealed to be happening on Obrodai. Trell (or a being usurping that name) could therefore be another Avatar of Autonomy (although that would beg the question if Trell should be considered female, as - up until now - all known Avatars of Autonomy seem to be female).

Trellium, also known as bavadinium, is the God Metal of Autonomy.

Properties[edit]

Trellium is a silvery metal with a red cast to it, and dark red spots similar to rust.[1][2] Like other God Metals, it displays many unusual properties. It is notable for repelling other forms of Investiture, with a force proportional to how close it is to the source of Investiture.[3] This causes it to try and roll away when in the proximity of harmonium, Hemalurgic spikes or an Allomancer burning metals.

Chemical Properties[edit]

The hardness of the metal is just above a nine, as it is scratched by diamond, but barely marks corundum. It is also very brittle. It has an extraordinarily high melting point, above 3,000 degrees. When heated, it lets off the full visual spectrum of light (i.e. it appears perfectly white), with the red portion of the spectrum going off the spectrometric scale.[4]

Interactions with Harmonium[edit]

When an electric current is passed through harmonium, the metal softens and its Investiture begins to polarize, becoming more atium-like on one end and more lerasium-like on the other.[3] If trellium is inserted between the two poles, a violent reaction occurs, as some of the harmonium's Investiture or matter is converted into pure energy.[5] While this technique fails to divide the harmonium, the resultant blast is extremely powerful; converting less than half a gram of harmonium into energy is capable of destroying a thick safe and the fortified room around it.[5] This interaction can be used to create powerful bombs; however, as these weapons rely upon a novel energy release mechanism, not even Autonomy or Harmony fully understand their true destructive potential.[6]

A separate interaction, detonating harmonium against trellium, produces small amounts of lerasium and atium.[7][8] Harmony uses this effect to manufacture atium.

Allomantic Use[edit]

When burned by an Allomancer, trellium has unknown properties.[9]

Feruchemical Use[edit]

When used by a Feruchemist, trellium has unknown properties.[9]

Hemalurgic Use[edit]

Trellium can steal Allomantic and Feruchemical abilities and grant them to kandra.[2] Presumably its Hemalurgic ability is similar to that of atium, allowing the transfer of any ability with somewhat variable success depending on the binding point. Using it as a Hemalurgic spike can keep the user hidden from Harmony.[10][11] This has a limited effect, however, and any more than a single spike will make the user visible to the Shard. It is an inherent property of the metal, and not a Hemalurgic attribute, that hides the user.[10]

Using trellium as a spike allows users to communicate with others. They can speak to others who have a Hemalurgic spike, but they cannot hear their thoughts.[12][13] They can also create a Connection with Autonomy's avatars, allowing them to communicate and feel each other's presence.[14][15] Some individuals spiked with trellium exhibit glowing red eyes at times.[16] This behavior is inconsistent; Granks's eyes start faintly glowing during his fight with Marasi, then the glow becomes vivid when he is near death. The glow fades once Marasi removes his trellium spike and he dies.[17] Furthermore, Autonomy herself can act and speak through an individual spiked by a trellium spike.[16][18]

Hemalurgic Constructs[edit]

Hemalurgic chimeras are created when a living human is implanted with a trellium spike in a specific manner.[1]

Trivia[edit]

 • In the Alloy of Law: Masks of the Past adventure game supplement, trellium allows kandra to use the Allomantic or Feruchemical abilities of another Hemalurgic spike they are spiked with. They also cannot be controlled by Harmony or brass Allomancy, but they also lose the non-sapience half of their blessing.
