Universe Cosmere

Lumar is a planet in the cosmere.[1][2]. It serves as the setting for Tress of the Emerald Sea. It is characterized most notably by its fluidized seas made of Aether, and its twelve, low, geostationary moons.[3] Described as a backwater by worldhoppers such as Hoid and Ulaam, it has nevertheless attracted the attention of an influential worldhopper organization from Sel and some Scadrial influence.[4][5][6][2]

Cosmology and Geography

Moons

It is surrounded by twelve coloured moons in a low, geostationary orbit, which deposit the aether spores which make up the spore seas.[7] Each moon is inhabited by a core Aether.[3]

Known moons include the Verdant Moon, Crimson Moon, Rose Moon, Zephyr Moon, Midnight Moon, and Sunlight Moon, [8] corresponding to the known Aethers.

Seas

The seas are made up not of water, but of the immense deposits of aether spores from the moons, these can be traversed due to hydrothermal vents periodically liquidizing the spores during The Seethe. It also goes through periods of dormancy, where the seas solidify and hold ships in place. During these periods of dormancy, one can walk across it, though the length of dormancy is unpredictable, ranging from minutes to days.[9]

Each sea is made up of spores of a different colour, due to being associated with a different core Aether. Known seas include the Rose Sea,[10] Emerald Sea,[10] Sapphire Sea,[11] Crimson Sea,[12] Midnight Sea,[12] and Sunlight Sea. [8] Several of these are inhabited, with people and civilizations forming on the various islands splitting the spores. However, not all seas are inhabited, with the Crimson and Midnight Seas, due to their dangerous nature, remaining uninhabited outside of a few notable exceptions.

The points at the border of seas intermingle and mix together.[13][14]

Crimson Sea

The Crimson Sea is made up of the spores of the Crimson Aether, and is known to be particularly dangerous not only due to the sharp stakes that form upon interaction with water, but also due to the unpredictability of the weather on the sea.[15] It is due to this that the sea is almost completely uninhabited, and people fear crossing it.

It borders the Midnight Sea and the Emerald Sea, and the only way to get to the Midnight Sea is through the Crimson Sea.[12]

Cultures

Verdant Kingdom

The Verdant Kingdom is the dominant civilization in the Emerald Sea. Ruled by the Verdant King, the kingdom exhibits a feudal system of governance, with dukes ruling over individual islands, but showing fealty and deference to the king.[14][7] Royal vessels patrol the Emerald Sea, and a system of both standard penal justice and debtor's prison are shown to have been established.[16] The Verdant King is shown to be a military-minded ruler, desiring war with the Sorceress and appointing war heroes to dukedoms and positions on his court.[17][14][18]

Seafaring Cultures

Seafaring cultures are shown to have their own social structures and code of conduct on Lumar. Piracy is an established institution and a general part of seafaring society on Lumar. While illegal, those pirates who avoid murder and simply force ships to surrender are considered an economic necessity by some, and if caught their crews only face imprisonment. In contrast, "Deadrunners," those crews which kill those who they steal from, are shunned by even other pirate crews, and face death in the event of capture. [19] In addition to pirates, merchant ships and royal vessels are commonly found on the spore seas, and presumably have their own codes of interaction.[19]

Iriali

At one point, Lumar was inhabited by Iriali, however by the time of Tress, they have been gone from the planet for 300 years. Described by some on Lumar as having "vanished," the fate of the Iriali seems unknown by the common population.[20] While the exact period of time for which they inhabited Lumar is unknown, they have left behind some form of material culture, notably exhibited by the Iriali cup which Tress has in her posession.[20]

Religion

Moon Worship

Within the Verdant Sea, and likely beyond, the primary religion is a form of lunar worship. Lunar worship is disseminated as a religion by groups of priests, gathered into various Moonschools, or schools of religious thought. Notable holidays include Moondays, where the planet's Sun is eclipsed by one of the moons.[21]

Scadrian Influence

Despite the dominance of lunar worship on Lumar, there is some Scadrian influence exhibited in their religious or cultural iconography, with death being said to have "nails in his eyes," presumably referring to Marsh.[6]

Legends

People can't even make up their minds on what color 'Bone Spores' are supposed to be. White or black? Or both?

There is a legend of a thirteenth spore type, known as Bone Spores.
