“The legends speak of monsters such as this, fell beasts that the ancient questing samurai had to face, the battling of which put their souls in peril. ”
Vastworms are enormous creatures that live in space and feed off of pure energy, including cytonic energy.[2] They are drawn to places where there are a lot of taynix, unless the minds of the taynix are well shielded.[2] The Superiority generally expends large amounts of resources to exterminate infestations of them before their numbers expand too much, though there are several hundred around the Superiority base Evensong.[2] Vastworms can be warded off by using an Inverted Magellan Pulse, which uses a frequency they don't like.[3]
Appearance and Biology[edit]
Vastworms resemble giant worms, and are covered cilia-like hairs and black and white spots. They are several kilometers long, and will devour entire ships.[2] A vastworm's throat is about twelve meters in diameter, and the inside is covered in long green tendrils. The tendrils are capable of draining a starfighter's shield with a single touch. The throat forms a long continuous tunnel throughout its body, and it's rear end has a large opening like its mouth.[3]
They can move incredibly fast despite their size, and undulate as they move.[1] They sometimes coil up as a defensive posture. When struck with destructor blasts, blue lights start glowing along their body.[4]
Culture[edit]
The kitsen have legends about the vastworms, which their samurai supposedly fought against in perilous battles.[1] According to Kimmalyn, the Saint slew one at some point, though the holy witness spelled it as "wurm".[1]
