Hoid is a recurring character in the cosmere, who has appeared in every cosmere novel, though some appearances are more subtle than others. He is confirmed to be the same individual^{[citation needed]}, but one who worldhops between planets. Hoid's actions and motives are mysterious, and due to the many years between novels in the chronology, Hoid must have some powers to live much longer than the average person.

Hoid is not a Shard^{[citation needed]}, nor is he a Herald, but something else entirely.

It has been said that the origin of Hoid will be revealed in the Dragonsteel series^{[citation needed]}, and so it is commonly believed Hoid is from Yolen, the world of Dragonsteel.

Appearances

Hoid often plays a beggar. On Sel he helped Sarene smuggle weapons into Elantris

He has appeared multiple times on Scadrial; to Kelsier he acted as an informant in Luthadel, he meets Elend and Spook on their way back to Luthadel as an unnamed Terrisman, he again acts as an informant on the streets of Fadrex City. Vin, on her way to see him, is spooked by him and decides not to. At the wedding of Joshin and Mi'chelle Yomen, Hoid is seen speaking to them, once again dressed as a beggar.

On Nalthis Hoid is employed by Lightsong's court as a storyteller. He recounts the story of Vo, the First Returned, and answers Lightsong and Siri's questions.

In a departure from his previous appearances, Hoid played a relatively major role on Roshar. Most often seen under the guise of Wit, Elhokar Kholin's court jester, he influenced Dalinar. He also met Kaladin and told a story about Derethil and the Wandersail. During the story, Hoid uses a special, ancient flute called a Trailman's flute. He uses this flute to use a magic Brandon made called Lightweaving, which altered the smoke of the fire beside him, creating images from the story. Hoid appears again later on in the book, at the end, near the time when a Herald enters the Kholin camp, spouts dying delirium, and falls dead.
