Arturo Mendez (callsign Amphisbaena) is a cadet in DDF Flight School and pilot number five in Skyward Flight.[1] He is the son of Valda Mendez and has a significant amount of practical flying experience prior to joining Flight School.[1] His callsign, Amphisbaena, comes from the mythological two headed, ant-eating serpent that goes by the same name. His flightmates have difficulty pronouncing his callsign, leading to it being shortened to Amphi.[citation needed] During Flight School he spends a majority of his training in a Poco.[2] His parents are farmers on the surface on the planet, however, he is sent for schooling in the Lower Caverns.[citation needed]
Appearance and Personality
Arturo is shorter than Jorgen.[1]
He is aware of the DDF's preference of aclivity rings over pilots and believes that real pilots should be able to land their ship if shot down.[3]
Attributes and Abilities
During Flight School Nedd trains to pilot a Poco, perform aerial maneuvers, and use its weaponry. He is highly knowledgable about piloting and starfighters, and has a significant amount of practical experience, having logged over two-hundred hours of flight time before beginning Flight School through acting as a copilot to his father.[1]
