! The following text is a collection of the information about Alethkar!
The listeners, called the Parshendi by the Alethi, are a singer ethnic group on Roshar. By the end of the War of Reckoning in the Vorin year 1174, they had a population of around 37 thousand individuals.sa2
Alethi is used widely throughout the eastern world to make the underscript of a book. Also, lots of Alethi epics, which are famous even outside Alethkar.sa3 Curly dark hair is northern Alethkar.sa2 Alethi women like to wear their hair in intricate braids.sa2

Slavery
Prior to the True Desolation, they lived in eastern Roshar, near the Shattered Plains. During the War of Reckoning, they inhabited the city of Narak, but after the arrival of the Everstorm and the start of the True Desolation the remaining Listeners left Narak, roaming around on the Shattered plains.
Slavery is common in Alethkar, although there are many laws surrounding it. These laws binding slavers and slaves are Vorin in origin, and as such apply to all the major Vorin realms. Every slave receives a brand on their forehead, appropriately named a slaves's brand. These brands are made up of two glyphs, and they indicate, among other things, where a slave was branded. Only lighteyes can brand someone a slave.sa1

Every man has a slave debt, which he can theoretically pay off to earn back his freedom. It is suspected by some people to be a shum however, intended to keep the slaves docile. This is due to the amount of the slave debt being an enormous amount, far more then a slave is sold for. Additionally, it is common for masters to find ways to cheat a slave out of their wages, charging them for housing etc. A master can also always set a man free, or the man can try and escape.sa1

Slaves themselves...
The Listeners used to live in the Unclaimed Hills, very close to the Shattered Plains. Some Listener families occupied the circular craters near the western edge of the plains, while others spent their lives living in the wilderness around these craters. Many Listeners believe that the wildernis should remain uncharted, left to greatshells and spren, although others strongly disagree with this.Sa4 It is likely because of this attitude that the Listeners know very little about the world and the wildernis beyond their cities.

Slavers...

A slaver must provide the reason someone was sold into slavery when he sells the slave, it is illegal to lie. Every man has a slave debt, but he can theoretically pay it off and earn back his freedom. It is suspected by some people to be a shum however, intended to keep the slaves docile because it is an enormous amount, far more then a slave is sold for. Many masters find ways to cheat a slave out of their wages, charging them for housing etc. A master can also always set a man free, or the man can try and escape. People don't like slavers, and so they often choose other slavers as company. According to Vorin rules, every slave has to be paid a small wage, half of what a non slave would receive. sa1 Slave carts, roughly 10 men per. Masters are free to give beatings. Stealing may make someone a slave (Chulls). Although it could also be a death sentence (stealing horses) Many Alethi slaves are sold to the remote, small and independent cities on the coast of the unclaimed hills. The rules binding slavers and slaves are Vorin in origin, and as such apply to all the major Vorin realms. Brands are burned into the skin. Brands are made up of a glyphpair; the highlord's district where the person is originally branded.sa1 Each slaver has a ledger containing information on the slaves, such as how much they've paid of their slave debt, it isn't uncommon to lie though. Prices range from roughly 1,5 emerald broams for a weak or bad slavesa1 to three emerald browns for a good one, although the average is two broams.sa1
After the assassination of King Gavilar Kholin the Listeners fled to the Shattered Plains, after this event they began inhabiting the city of Narak.WoR After the end of the war and the Battle of Narak the remaining Listeners roamed around the Shattered Plains for a while.Sa2Sa4

Agriculture and Foraging
Vorin legal code of citizenship
Incredibly complex. People who provide an essential function to their settlement, as well as their apprentices, are given special privileges.sa1
The Listeners cultivate multiple plant species. They grow and eat grain from a certain type of rockbud.sa4 They also use the dried pulp from a species of rockbud to make paper.sa4 The Listeners also grow and prune Shalebark, although they mostly do this for decoration.Sa2 They also eat mushrooms, which they gather in the forests near the Shattered Plains.Sa4

A lighteyes of sufficient rank can arrest someone, but then they have to fight an inquest.sa1 There are a small number of nahns, the lowest ones, where you don’t need to fight an inquest.sa2 The tradition of the trial by sword was banned by Queen Jasnah Kholin.
They also practice animal husbandry and hunting. They are known to have domesticated chullssa4 and hunt chasmfiends, although they only do this during certain seasons.Sa4 They also keep hogs, which are herded around by groups of Listeners,sa4 because of this they have access to hogsmeat and hogshide leather.Sa4

The Five
Currency
As with many other nations on Roshar, their economy was based upon glass spheres with cut polestones in their center, known simply as spheres. In the mint, they check sphere weights in order to see if they fell into the proper categories.sa4 The value of polestones, and thus the worth of sphere denominations in their economy, is based around the value of the substances a polestone can transmute another substance into.
Use and Function
The Listeners are ruled by five individuals, collectively known as the Council of Five, or simply the Five. Before the Listener families unified each family had their own Five, but after their unification the listeners accepted the rule of a single Five.Sa4 It is unknown how these five Listeners are chosen. The Five seem to have absolute authority over the Listeners, although any decision needs at least a majority among the Five before it can be put into action.Sa2 The duties of the Five are very diverse, from approving ideas to planning attacks on other families.sa2sa4 At least some professions have leaders whose authorities exist outside of that of the Five. One such Listener is Denshil, who serves as the Listener head of farming.Sa4

Composition
State Income
Taxation is levied upon darkeyes and landless lighteyes over rights to live on the territory of wealthier lighteyes.sa3 If a citylord fails to pay his taxes to the highlord, people are sent to collect it from him, often violently.sa3sa3 The highlord answers to the highprince;sa3 and highprinces themselves are taxed by the king for the right to use soulcasters, which were an important resource in waging prolonged, large-scale conflicts. This is the primary form of taxation levied upon the highprinces by the king.sa1
The composition of the Five has changed over time as more forms were discovered. At first, the Five were all in dullform, and later, after the discovery of workform, the members of the council were all in workform. When nimbleform was discovered, the Council changed to being made up of one member of each form.sa2

Slaves and parshmen. Most Alethi towns have no surgeon, they do the best with local men who learn most of what they know from superstition or working on the occasional wounded Chull.sa1
Military
Armament
Listener soldiers use Warform, this grants them strong carapace armor as well as increased strength.sa2 Though not as strong or resilient as someone with Shardplate, warform listeners are a real threat to regular human soldiers. Their strength allows them to use heavy weapons like battleaxes, hammers, spears and sometimes clubs or swords.sa1Sa4 They are also capable of jumping far enough to cross the chasms on the Shattered Plains.sa1 Most of the steel weapons owned by the Listeners are either of Alethi origin or have been passed down from parent to child starting at the abandonment of the old gods.Sa4 The Listeners are also fond of bows and two-handed slings,sa1 although bows were viewed as to deadly to wield against other listeners.sa4 Some Listeners carry large shields called stormshields when going out into a highstorm, however it is unknown if this type of shield is also used in combat.Sa4 It is considered the duty of each warrior to care for his ancient weapon and make his own arrows.Sa4

Akanny in the Sadeas Princedom served as a major source of agriculture throughout Alethkar, being the source of a signifigant portion of the nation's lavis and tallew.sa3 Other towns and cities throughout Alethkar are important centures for the production of hog leather and meat, whilst others still harvested gumfrems for their gemhearts, which were used in the soulcasting of meat.sa3 Merchants of 1 and 2st nahn. (Footnote-like in other Vorin kingdoms). Many people go to the tavern: a days work and then an evening at the tavern for fun.sa2
The Listeners had eight sets of Shardplate and Shardblades,sa4 they gradually lost all of them during the War of Reckoning however.sa2 It is considered forbidden for these shards to be wielded against other listeners, they were originally used only for greatshell hunts, although they were also used to fight the Alethi during the War of Reckoning. Before this war it was tradition that when one of the proper eight listener cities was conquered the defeated family would relinquish their shards to the victors.sa4

The Market
Regular soldiers often wear simple garments that are tailored around their warform carapace. Some of them also wear long coates, although these aren’t worn into battle. The Listener general wears a cap on their skullplate and a tight red cloth as a cape.Sa2 The listeners dressed their soldiers in white, believing that a man should be able to see his own death coming, white also signals to other listeners that a battle is coming, instead of a different interaction such as trade.Sa4 Because of this they also dress assassins in white.Sa1 This changed during the War of Reckoning, although it is unknown why.sa1
Alethkar has some form of open market,sa4 though the amount of openness in the economy, that is the amount of government regulation in the market, is unclear.

Tactics
Foreign Trade
Through trade treaties, they are able to trade with Jah Keved for cheap.sa3 As of the True Desolation, Fen Rnamdi held administration over trade and supply, as one of the stipulations in the coalition of monarchs.sa3
The Listeners’ warfare used to be highly ritualistic, with little to no actual combat and deaths.sa4 They would only fight to capture one of the cities on the western edge of the Shattered Plains, any family that attacks for a different reason would immediately be shunned by the other families.sa4 There were times where traditions were broken and battles turned into horrible massacres.sa Their tactics changed significantly during the War of Reckoning, although some aspects of their original tactics remained. These changes were likely made by the listener general,Eshonai.

Architecture
The listeners would often attack shortly before or after a storm came.Sa4sa4 They used drums to warn allies and enemies of an upcoming battle. The preparations for a battle would mostly be made up of where to put their warriors and what boasts to yell.sa4 These battles often started with the participants yelling boasts, insults and challenges at each other. After that both families would take turns throwing spears at each other, when someone was hit their family might withdraw, but if they didn’t both sides would move on to close combat.sa4
Streets run east to west and doorways face away from the Origin bcs highstorms.sa2
Infrastructure
Alethkar has poor transport infrastructure, making travel and resource movement between distant cities slow and cumbersome.cite This increases the important of soulcasters to their economy and military.cite

The aquisition of Oathgates after the Battle of Narak greatly assisted in trade across the continent.sa3 Many lighteyes have gardens in front of their mansions. During the year 1167 oil lamps were considered by many to be provincial.sa1 Many mansions also have a crypt.sa1 Every city has a little huddle of buildings for caravaneers and the likes. Also large stormbunkers to house armies or multiple caravans.sa3 many small villages have a central cistern to catch rain water and filter out the crem. Buildings are built up against one another for protection. Also, rounded roofs repel te wind better. Some flats/large buildings as well that can hold a dozen families. Classical style: pillars in the front.sa2
A notable aspect of the listeners' new combat strategy is their use of warpairssa1, pairs of warriors who fight side by side as partners. These listener warpairs move around the battlefield in coordinated maneuvers and attack enemy troops with heavy weapons from multiple directions.sa1 The Listeners also use shortbows to harry and weaken their enemies.sa1 The listeners have at times executed raids during a highstorm.sa2

Dining etiquette
After six years of war the listeners also became very adept at dealing with the Alethi Shardbearers. They would use two-handed slings to hurl head-sized rocks at Shardbearers; these rocks were capable quickly damage Shardplate, with a single blow being enough to make cracks in an unharmed section of Plate.sa1
Lighteyes meals generally have a cup of water for dipping one’s fingers and clean white napkins beside them.sa1

The True Desolation (1173 - )
Organisation and Hierarchy
True Desolation
The Listener army is divided into multiple divisions, each a hundred and twenty-eight in number. These divisions have their own name, and may sometimes be made up of of different forms entirely, an example of this is the Storm division, a division made entirely of Stormforms.Sa2 Some of these divisions may join into a single army, called a warband.Sa4 During wartime the Listeners also have many warpair scouts, usually from a single division, roaming around, searching for any sign of their enemies. Near the end of the War of Reckoning the entire army was around seventeen thousand Listeners, or 133 divisions, strong.Sa2

The Listener military is commanded by a general, also called a warleader, who is also the warform representative in the Council of Five. During the War of Reckoning Eshonai served as general.sa2 Beneath the general are a number of lieutenants, it is likely that these lieutenants control a division each.Sa2

Also, meeting with listeners. Urithiru and warcamps, highprinces appointed (Roion and Aladar as judge). Battles and retreat to Jah Keved and Herdaz There, he fought against the Voidbringers as they encroached northward into Alethkar. He attempted to rally the rest of the troops in the country, but they were forced back towards Herdaz.sa3 Alethi aid other countries (Aladar). a little more about the siege of Kholinar, with more emphasis on other cities and settlements. More about Jasnah’s crowning. He (Dalinar) instructed the officer to make it known that Ialai had killed herself and told him that they could begin a full occupation of the warcamps.sa4 Planning before thaylen field. More on Karanak. Expedition to Emul: war and stripping Ruthar, trial by sword forbidden. Also more on the battle of Narak.
Culture
People
Families
Prior to the War of Reckoning, the listeners were organized in tribe-like families that would vie for control of the ten cities along the western border of the Shattered Plains. There were roughly a dozen families.Sa4 Some notable listener families include:
;;First-RhythmFirst-Rhythm
The family of Eshonai, Venli, Thude,sa4 Bila,sa4 and likely also Rlain.sa4 They were thousands strong around the time Eshonai first met with King Gavilar's expedition and boasted a noble heritage, though it had been many years since they had controlled one of the ten cities.sa4
;;Living-SongsLiving-Songs
The second family approached by the First-Rhythm family after the discovery of warform in their attempt at unification of the listener tribes.sa4
;;Pure-SongPure-Song
Known to have raided the Fourth-Movement family out in the wilderness, away from any city, in an attempt to steal their weapons. This action earned them the scorn of other families.sa4
;;Fourth-MovementFourth-Movement
Once raided by the Pure-Song family in an attempt to seize their weapons.sa4

Fashion
Listeners wear a wide variety of clothing. They are often seen wearing robes,sa4 shirts skirts and coats.sa4 When listeners go out into a highstorm to adopt a new form they often wear loose robes. This is likely so that their clothes don’t get ripped apart during the transformation of their body.Sa4 Listener men weave bits of uncut gemstones in their beard. Members of each family all wear different gemstones, so a Listener can recognise what family someone belongs to just by looking at the gemstones in their beard.Sa4 They also wear bands on their braids, members of different families also have differently colored bands.Sa4

Relation to Freedom
Due to their history the listeners greatly value their freedom. Because of their fear of the gods, and their ancestors’ sacrifice, the listeners decided to assassinate king Gavilar of Alethkar. Although during the resulting war many listeners stopped caring about their origins. It is also important to the Listeners that everyone can choose their own form, and the Five cannot command people to choose a form.Sa2Sa2 Some singers hate trapping spren, instead they prefer to go out into the highstorms themselves and attract the proper spren.Sa2

Dalinar Kholin, with the king’s authority, released a proclamation, first in private to the highprinces and then to the public,sa2 stating that all gemhearts won in battle now belonged to the king and the wealth will be apportioned at the Crown's discretion. This proclamation was made to refocus the Highprinces' attention on the war and not on gaining wealth. Hatham was the only highprince to comment on this proclamation publicly, denouncing Elhokar's decision.sa2
Songs
expand

Some time later king Elhokar suffers an assassination attempt in the form of a sabotaged railing, luckily his guards can pull him up before he falls. Another while later the assassin in white returns, he ostensibly attempts to assassinate Elhokar, although he actually means to kill the king’s uncle, Dalinar. This attempt is thwarted however, and the king calls a meeting of Alethkar’s elite. Shallan Davar, betrothed of Adolin Kholin, brings news to this meeting, telling the members of house Kholin about Jasnah Kholin’s death. A couple of weeks later Adolin meets with Eshonai, the listener general, to discuss a listener surrender. She is cold to him however, and denies his every attempt at making peace.sa2
In order to remember their history and important skills the listeners remembered them via songs, each to the beat of a different rhythm of Roshar. The Listeners also had songs about human Surgebinders.Sa4 These songs were practiced and preserved by a Keeper of Songs. The known songs are as follows:

Troubled by the glyphs scratched on his walls and wanting to end the War of Reckoning Dalinar Kholin soon began to gather allies for an expedition onto the Plains.sa2 Weeks, and much preparation, later he sets of, taking his entire army with him. Three of the highprinces join him Roion, Sebarial and Aladar.

As the four armies neared the center of the Shattered Plains they discovered that the listeners had changed forms. Close to the center they held a war council and decided to assault the listener forces. This battle, called the Battle of Narak, occured on and saw the deaths of many Alethi, including highprince Roion. The Alethi forces were victorious, but ultimately unable to prevent the summoning of the Everstorm. During this same time there was an assassination attempt on the life of king Elhokar by the diagram, but this plan was foiled when Kaladin swore the third ideal. The Everstorm caused the start of the True Desolation.Words of Radiance/Timeline
Architecture
Prior to the True Desolation the Listeners were technologically behind the rest of Roshar. They lived in huts made from hardened crem over frames of shell, which were huddled on the leeward side of lumps of stone to protect from highstorms.WoR These buildings were fragile and would often be destroyed by highstorms, although the Listeners would simply rebuild them.WoK The Listeners also lived in hogshide tents.Sa4 The Shattered Plains contained a large number of Listener bridges, which were flimsy and made of wood and rope.Sa4 These bridges were likely destroyed during the War of Reckoning. They furnish their houses with woven mats and painted banners.sa4

The Everstorm caused the Parshmen to become whole again, and Parshmen across the world, including those in Alethkar, broke free, fleeing from their owners. These Parshmen, now singers, along with the unexpected Everstorm, wreaked havoc among the Alethi. Many buildings were damaged or destroyed by the storm, although the singers generally left their towns peacefully. The Alethi armies weathered the storm and the singers well, be it in Urithiru or the warcamps.
When a highstorm is close the people prepare their homes, this includes stuffing rags under their doors, shoving bracing boards into position and pounding large wooden blocks into their open windows. Before the start of the War of Reckoning some of the Listener families occupied the 10 circular craters near the western edge of the plains, but they were eventually forced to move to the center of the Shattered Plains.WoR

A short time after the first Everstorm Dalinar issued a command, all highprinces were to abandon the warcamps and move to Urithiru, although many highprinces disobeyed this order, staying in the warcamps. After highprince Torol Sadeas arrived at the tower he was murdered by Adolin Kholin. Following his murder, rulership of the Sadeas Princedom was passed to Meridas Amaram by Ialai Sadeas, as the heir to the position was too young to fill it.sa2sa3 At the same time Dalinar appointed highprince Aladar as highprince of Information and Roion's son as the new Roion Highprince.sa3
Crafts
Paper
The Listeners have their own unique way of making paper. They make the paper from dried rockbud pulp following a harvest.sa2 These rockbuds are native to the unclaimed hills and shattered plains. Their paper is much rougher then human paper and varies in Color. Their paper is also textured and full instead of neat and sterile.WoR They also have a song describing the process. This ensures that the Listeners never forget how to make it.sa4

On , the Alethi and Thaylen armies defended Thaylen City against the incursion of the Fused army.sa3sa3 This battle was motivated by the Alethi wishing to protect their Thaylen allies, and in order to secure the Thaylen Oathgate; They wished to secure the Oathgate due to the strategic advantage it granted them.citeexpand
The listeners were originally called the Last Legion,sa2 and like other singers in the Voidbringer army, they followed the commands of the Fused, who were the listeners' gods. The listeners lived in somewhere called the dark home (but this might have been metaphorical for being under Odium's influence, and not an actual place). The Last Legion was sent to fight in the farthest plains, probably the plains of Natanatan and the Shattered Plains.sa2

By the time of the Battle of Thaylen Field, most of Alethkar was under Fused hegemony.sa3 One of the major military centers in the occupation was the capital city of the Vamah princedom, Revolar. Between 40,000 and 50,000 Singers were stationed there.sa3
One day the Last Legion, four hundred strong,Sa4 fled, leaving the forms of power for dullform. Despite being thus crippled, it would lead to freedom from their gods. These listeners composed many songs to remember their history and forms, such as the Song of Listing, Song of Secrets, and Song of Histories because they risked forgetting everything. They had only known how to transform into forms other than dullform and mateform with the help of gods.sa2 Modern-day listeners call this period "the long sleep." sa4

A year after the Battle of Thaylen Field, Dalinar had managed to retake the southwestern corner of Alethkar which touches the Tarat Sea. Dalinar considered launching a major offensive into Alethkar but was convinced by the Mink that it would be wiser to attempt to retake Emul.sa4
Since the listeners recall this story about throwing off the Fused, this event must have occurred prior to or around the time of Aharietiam, the Last Desolation, as the Fused were trapped in Damnation for four and a half millennia after that point.

In 1175, an attempt was mounted by the coalition to evacuate the city of Hearthstone. After a battle with Fused occupiers, most notably Lezian, all but fifteen occupants of Hearthstone were successfully evacuated via the Fourth Bridge, and brought to Urithiru.sa4 During the battle, Brightlord Roshone was killed by Vyre, leading to the position of citylady eventually being passed on to Laral.sa4sa4
Later, near the time of the Recreance and what was probably the False Desolation,sa3 the Unmade Ba-Ado-Mishram Connected to most singers, providing the singers with forms of power and Voidlight.sa3 The Knights Radiant sought to stop this threat by imprisoning Ba-Ado-Mishram. They succeeded but in doing so, stole part of singers' souls, turning them into slaveform.sa3 The listeners were spared from this event, and so it seems that they were not involved with the False Desolation. They became the only singers on Roshar with their minds still intact. The listeners inhabited the broken kingdom of Natanatan and the Unclaimed Hills in eastern Roshar for long time, unknown to most humans.sa2 For much of this, they knew only dullform and mateform, but eventually discovered workform.

Alethi Discovery
To modern humans, the listeners were originally discovered by Alethi King Gavilar's brother Dalinar Kholin during a hunting trip.sa1sa1 Dalinar was scouting in a forest that wasn't on any maps, in a valley south of the Shattered Plains and about two weeks' march from the Drying Sea. There, he found Eshonai, exploring.sa3sa4 She led the humans to her family's camp. In that same day, Venli had discovered that painspren may be the key to discovering warform, but her discovery was overshadowed by her sister's.sa1

At first, the Council of Five only let a few listeners come to meet the Alethi, afraid of frightening them. Slowly, some of the listeners, including Eshonai, began to learn the Alethi language. The Alethi were very interested in the listener's ancient weapons and in the chasmfiends. Due to a mistake in translation, the Alethi started believing that the listeners worshipped the chasmfiends.sa4 The listeners were very intrigued by the Alethi's parshmen, believing they had no souls.sa4 The Alethi called the listeners the "Parshendi", or parshmen who can think.sa1 They gave many steel weapons to Eshonai's family, wanting them to take one of the cities at the edge of the Plains.sa4

In the next human visit, Eshonai and Venli's family had already taken one of the cities at the border of the Shattered Plains. Venli had made no more progress in discovering warform. One of the Alethi, Axindweth, gave a gemstone to Venli with Ulim trapped inside, saying it might help her cure Jaxlim.sa4 Venli broke the gemstone, and started talking with Ulim.sa4 Ulim helped Venli cut a gemstone so that it glowed more brightly, and trap a painspren in it.sa4 She made about two dozen gemstones with painspren, and gave them for listeners to adopt warform. One of those was Jaxlim, but since Jaxlim didn't adopt the proper mindset for the form, Eshonai, who was acompanying her, took the form instead.

After the storm in which they adopted warform, another family attacked them. So, the warform listeners and the family's Shardbearer went out and told them to unite with their family, in order to show the humans an united nation when they next came to the Shattered Plains.sa4 They went to dozens of families with their proposal of unity, and they all gathered in Eshonai and Venli's city. Venli told Ulim to have his contacts among the humans make Gavilar bring listeners to the human cities, hoping to intimidate the other listeners and convince them to take forms of power.sa4

However, upon visiting the human cities, the listeners weren't intimidated; they liked the city, and enjoyed themselves there.sa4 They signed a treaty with the humans, and there was a party to celebrate it.sa1 That day, Nale approached Venli, saying Gavilar was going to betray the listeners and that Venli had to assassinate the king to stop him. That gave Ulim the idea of killing the king to drive the humans to attack the listeners, to intimidate them.sa4 At the same time, Gavilar indicated to Eshonai that he wanted to bring back the listener gods. Since the Council of Five feared their gods' return, they voted and decided to kill the king to stop him. Ulim had guided Klade to buy Szeth, so they sent Szeth and he killed Gavilar.sa3 The assassination led to the formation of the Alethi Vengeance Pact and caused the War of Reckoning, a prolonged war between the listeners and the Alethi on the Shattered Plains.

War of Reckoning
During the war, the listeners moved their population to the city at the center of the Shattered Plains. They named the city Narak, meaning exile, because they were trapped there after the humans moved to the cities at the edge of the Plains.sa2sa4 With help from Ulim, Venli discovered nimbleform, though it still took her several tries to do it.sa4 The war of attrition lasted for six years, and the listener population slowly dwindled.sa2

In the meantime, Venli worked to discover stormform. When cutting gemhearts to make them brighter, her scholars secretly saved pieces of the gemstones to store spren. The main problem Venli was trying to solve was how to draw the stormspren to the Physical Realm.sa4 She eventually discovered that lightning pulls the spren through, and managed to trap the spren.sa4 Venli brought the form to the Five, and they agreed, though Eshonai insisted she should be the one to try the form, because Venli was too valuable with her knowledge of the forms.sa2

Eshonai took the form, and when she returned to the Five, she proposed to transform every listener to stormform, to summon a storm against the Alethi. However, Zuln didn't agree, and she convinced Abronai to disagree as well. So, Eshonai went to the listeners and proclaimed that the Five could not forbid someone from taking a form if they wished to, and that she would take everyone who wished and transform them into stormform. She gathered the people that refused to transform, and put Thude to guard them. They fled into the chasms, and Eshonai let them, because they would be killed in the next highstorm.sa4

At the Battle of Narak, where Highprince Dalinar Kholin led an expedition to end the War of Reckoning, the listeners in stormform sung a terrible song. It formed the Everstorm and with it, the True Desolation began.sa2

The True Desolation
Shortly after the Battle of Narak, the Fused began to take listener bodies.sa3 It seemed that they transformed every single listener into a Fused, except for Venli, who was chosen by Odium to remain alive, taking envoyform; however, it was later discovered that others survived, specifically Rlain, Thude, Jaxlim, and some others who resisted the change to stormform.sa3sa3sa4sa4

Odium used Venli to tell the story of the listeners to the new singers, to inspire them and show them that the people who summoned the Everstorm are singers like them, not beings of legend. Instructed by Odium, she painted the listeners as an heroic group, sacrificing themselves to free the enslaved singers, to be the foundation myth of Odium's growing empire.sa3 However, Odium also feared the listeners, as the people who had rebelled against him, so he stopped allowing Venli to answer questions and instructed her to tell her story in a specific way.sa3

Hello everyone, I am Nightstar The Bright. I really enjoy reading Brandon Sanderson’s books, sometime after I read them all I began editing the Coppermind.

Notable pages I reworked

! The following text is a collection of the information about Alethkar! Alethi is used widely throughout the eastern world to make the underscript of a book. Also, lots of Alethi epics, which are famous even outside Alethkar.[1] Curly dark hair is northern Alethkar.[2] Alethi women like to wear their hair in intricate braids.[3]

Slavery[edit]

Slavery is common in Alethkar, although there are many laws surrounding it. These laws binding slavers and slaves are Vorin in origin, and as such apply to all the major Vorin realms. Every slave receives a brand on their forehead, appropriately named a slaves's brand. These brands are made up of two glyphs, and they indicate, among other things, where a slave was branded. Only lighteyes can brand someone a slave.[4]

A master can also always set a man free, or the man can try and escape.[4]

Slaves themselves...

[5] Slave carts, roughly 10 men per. Brands are made up of a glyphpair; the highlord's district where the person is originally branded.[4] Each slaver has a ledger containing information on the slaves, such as how much they've paid of their slave debt, it isn't uncommon to lie though. Prices range from roughly 1,5 emerald broams for a weak or bad slave[6] to three emerald browns for a good one, although the average is two broams.[7]

Vorin legal code of citizenship[edit]

Incredibly complex. People who provide an essential function to their settlement, as well as their apprentices, are given special privileges.[8]

A lighteyes of sufficient rank can arrest someone, but then they have to fight an inquest.[8] There are a small number of nahns, the lowest ones, where you don’t need to fight an inquest.[9] The tradition of the trial by sword was banned by Queen Jasnah Kholin.

Economy[edit]

Currency[edit]

As with many other nations on Roshar, their economy was based upon glass spheres with cut polestones in their center, known simply as spheres. In the mint, they check sphere weights in order to see if they fell into the proper categories.[10] The value of polestones, and thus the worth of sphere denominations in their economy, is based around the value of the substances a polestone can transmute another substance into.[11]

State Income[edit]

Taxation is levied upon darkeyes and landless lighteyes over rights to live on the territory of wealthier lighteyes.[12] If a citylord fails to pay his taxes to the highlord, people are sent to collect it from him, often violently.[13][12] The highlord answers to the highprince;[14] and highprinces themselves are taxed by the king for the right to use soulcasters, which were an important resource in waging prolonged, large-scale conflicts. This is the primary form of taxation levied upon the highprinces by the king.[15]

Labour and professions[edit]

Slaves and parshmen. Most Alethi towns have no surgeon, they do the best with local men who learn most of what they know from superstition or working on the occasional wounded Chull.[8]

Akanny in the Sadeas Princedom served as a major source of agriculture throughout Alethkar, being the source of a signifigant portion of the nation's lavis and tallew.[16] Other towns and cities throughout Alethkar are important centures for the production of hog leather and meat, whilst others still harvested gumfrems for their gemhearts, which were used in the soulcasting of meat.[16] Merchants of 1 and 2st nahn. (Footnote-like in other Vorin kingdoms). Many people go to the tavern: a days work and then an evening at the tavern for fun.[17]

The Market[edit]

Alethkar has some form of open market,[18] though the amount of openness in the economy, that is the amount of government regulation in the market, is unclear.

Foreign Trade[edit]

Through trade treaties, they are able to trade with Jah Keved for cheap.[19] As of the True Desolation, Fen Rnamdi held administration over trade and supply, as one of the stipulations in the coalition of monarchs.[20]

Architecture[edit]

Streets run east to west and doorways face away from the Origin bcs highstorms.[17]

Infrastructure[edit]

Alethkar has poor transport infrastructure, making travel and resource movement between distant cities slow and cumbersome.[citation needed] This increases the important of soulcasters to their economy and military.[citation needed]

The aquisition of Oathgates after the Battle of Narak greatly assisted in trade across the continent.[20] Many lighteyes have gardens in front of their mansions. During the year 1167 oil lamps were considered by many to be provincial.[8] Many mansions also have a crypt.[21] Every city has a little huddle of buildings for caravaneers and the likes. Also large stormbunkers to house armies or multiple caravans.[22] many small villages have a central cistern to catch rain water and filter out the crem. Buildings are built up against one another for protection. Also, rounded roofs repel te wind better. Some flats/large buildings as well that can hold a dozen families. Classical style: pillars in the front.[2]

Dining etiquette[edit]

Lighteyes meals generally have a cup of water for dipping one’s fingers and clean white napkins beside them.[8]

The True Desolation (1173 - )[edit]

Also, meeting with listeners. Urithiru and warcamps, highprinces appointed (Roion and Aladar as judge). Battles and retreat to Jah Keved and Herdaz There, he fought against the Voidbringers as they encroached northward into Alethkar. He attempted to rally the rest of the troops in the country, but they were forced back towards Herdaz.[23] Alethi aid other countries (Aladar). a little more about the siege of Kholinar, with more emphasis on other cities and settlements. More about Jasnah’s crowning. He (Dalinar) instructed the officer to make it known that Ialai had killed herself and told him that they could begin a full occupation of the warcamps.[24] Planning before thaylen field. More on Karanak. Expedition to Emul: war and stripping Ruthar, trial by sword forbidden. Also more on the battle of Narak.

Dalinar Kholin, with the king’s authority, released a proclamation, first in private to the highprinces and then to the public,[25] stating that all gemhearts won in battle now belonged to the king and the wealth will be apportioned at the Crown's discretion. This proclamation was made to refocus the Highprinces' attention on the war and not on gaining wealth. Hatham was the only highprince to comment on this proclamation publicly, denouncing Elhokar's decision.[26]

She is cold to him however, and denies his every attempt at making peace.[27]

Troubled by the glyphs scratched on his walls and wanting to end the War of Reckoning Dalinar Kholin soon began to gather allies for an expedition onto the Plains.[28] Weeks, and much preparation, later he sets of, taking his entire army with him. Three of the highprinces join him Roion, Sebarial and Aladar.

As the four armies neared the center of the Shattered Plains they discovered that the listeners had changed forms. Close to the center they held a war council and decided to assault the listener forces. This battle, called the Battle of Narak, occured on Ishishach 1173 and saw the deaths of many Alethi, including highprince Roion. The Alethi forces were victorious, but ultimately unable to prevent the summoning of the Everstorm. During this same time there was an assassination attempt on the life of king Elhokar by the diagram, but this plan was foiled when Kaladin swore the third ideal. The Everstorm caused the start of the True Desolation.[29]

Following his murder, rulership of the Sadeas Princedom was passed to Meridas Amaram by Ialai Sadeas, as the heir to the position was too young to fill it.[30][13] At the same time Dalinar appointed highprince Aladar as highprince of Information and Roion's son as the new Roion Highprince.[31]

Situation in Alethkar. Coalition. Kholinar. Thaylen field. Hearthstone. Karanak.

Meanwhile, the Alethkar homelands were besieged by the newly awakened singer forces led by the Fused, culminating in the siege and eventual fall of Kholinar.[32]

After Elhokar was killed by Moash during the siege, and Adolin Kholin refused to take the throne after the Battle of Thaylen Field, Jasnah Kholin became Queen.[33][34] The current heir to the throne is Elhokar's son, Gavinor -- however, he's still a child and a regency in his name was deemed too unstable and dangerous during the time of the True Desolation.

On Nanishah 1174[35], the Alethi and Thaylen armies defended Thaylen City against the incursion of the Fused army.[36][37] This battle was motivated by the Alethi wishing to protect their Thaylen allies, and in order to secure the Thaylen Oathgate; They wished to secure the Oathgate due to the strategic advantage it granted them.[citation needed][expand]

By the time of the Battle of Thaylen Field, most of Alethkar was under Fused hegemony.[38] One of the major military centers in the occupation was the capital city of the Vamah princedom, Revolar. Between 40,000 and 50,000 Singers were stationed there.[39]

A year after the Battle of Thaylen Field, Dalinar had managed to retake the southwestern corner of Alethkar which touches the Tarat Sea. Dalinar considered launching a major offensive into Alethkar but was convinced by the Mink that it would be wiser to attempt to retake Emul.[40]

In Chach 1175, an attempt was mounted by the coalition to evacuate the city of Hearthstone. After a battle with Fused occupiers, most notably Lezian, all but fifteen occupants of Hearthstone were successfully evacuated via the Fourth Bridge, and brought to Urithiru.[41] During the battle, Brightlord Roshone was killed by Vyre, leading to the position of citylady eventually being passed on to Laral.[41][18]
