Hesho is a kitsen captain and the former king of an absolute monarchy taking up over a third of the planet.[1] Hesho travels to Starsight with a contingent of fifty of his former subjects, including his shield bearer, Kauri, and a senator, Aria, to prove that their race is worthy of primary citizenship within the Superiority.[2][3] He is killed by Brade during the Winzik's attack on Detritus. Kauri takes command of the Swims Against the Current in a Stream Reflecting the Sun following his death, though it is unclear whether she was formally designated as his successor as the kitsen's captain or if she simply temporarily took command until the end of the battle.[4]
Trivia
- Hesho has skill in poetry. He introduces himself as a "humble poet"[3] and claims that he would have been a poet in another life.[5]
- Hesho has white fur with a pattern in red on his snout and ears.[6]
- Hesho's status as former king of his people is somewhat questionable, as he seems to bear the title in all but name.[6] He is determined to convince all those around him that this is no longer the case.[7] Hesho was removed from rule around three weeks before meeting Spensa.[1]
- Hesho is a member of his species' democratic assembly.[5] The assembly always votes unanimously against him in a failed attempt to prove that they are independent-minded and hold no loyalty to their former king. [5]
- Hesho is known by many titles, including Your Normalness,[8] "Unexalted One Who Is Not King",[9], and "Unexalted One" [9]
