A focus is a specific magic-related term in the Cosmere, it is the method by which Investiture is formed into magical effects. Magic systems use the focus as a filter for what the effect is.

Magic Systems and Their Focus

AonDor
Patterns connected to geographical location that once placed allow Investiture to affect the Physical Realm.
Allomancy
Metal is taken into the body and used as a filter determine what effect is created. [1]
Feruchemy
Metal is used to determine what attributes can be stored in it.
Hemalurgy
Metal is used to steal and implant attributes, both magical and non magical, from one person to the next.The metal determins what can be stolen as well as the location on the body when drawing and implanting . Flowing blood is required.
Awakening
Using Breath and color drawn from material, commands can animate objects, pitch and tone is important in this process as is the mental picture in the awakener's mind. [1]
Surgebinding
The Nahel Bond between Spren and Humans decide what Surges are available to be used.
Soulcasting
The molecular structure of gems infused with Stormlight determine what category of things it can be changed into. The exact thing something transforms into is determined by the will of the person Soulcasting.
Fabrials

It is not clear what foci exist on Roshar for Surgebinding. It has been suggested that Stormlight itself is the focus there, though it could be the spren.
