The Returned were resurrected humans on Nalthis. Vasher refers to them as Type One Biochromatic Entities--Spontaneous Sentient BioChromatic Manifestations in a Deceased Host.[1]

The Returned retained no memory of their previous existence and are worshipped as gods in Hallandren. The exact process of a Returned's resurrection is unclear; however, Lightsong had a Voice speak to him, offering him to Return and change the events of his vision. This voice is confirmed to be the Shard Endowment.[2]

Breath

Each Returned was gifted with a single, powerful Breath which allows them to reach the Fifth Heightening. This divine Breath was a Splinter of Endowment.[3] A Returned may give this Breath (sacrificing himself) to heal one person.[4]

A Returned consumed one Breath per week as a consequence of being reborn. Their body fed off of any Breaths they had available, including their divine Breath, and would die if there were no Breaths to feed on.

Returned could, however, receive more Breaths on top of their divine Breath. They could then use these Breaths for normal Awakening purposes.Template:Annotation ref

Appearance

Modern Returned appear how they subconsciously think they should look at the time of their return. A Returned should be able with learn to change their appearance. The old gods looked old and the heroic gods looked strong, as examples.[5] However, common traits included being larger than normal humans, just under 7 feet in height, and giving off a color-altering aura of the 5th heightening.

A Returned is able to suppress their divine Breath, altering their appearance to look like a normal human.[5] However, a normal-looking Returned still had increased strength and speed, immunity to disease, and agelessness.[citation needed]

Religion

In Hallandren the Returned were worshipped as gods sent by the Iridescent Tones to guide their followers. As such the Returned were fed one Breath each week in order to maintain their life. In exchange the Returned were petitioned by the people of the city to give up their breath as a cure for illnesses.[4] They were also expected to perform auguries by reviewing works of art sent by citizens.[6]
