Denth's crew is a small group of mercenaries on Nalthis hired by Bluefingers to aid in the Pahn Kahl rebellion.[1]

History

Arsteel joined up with Denth sometime after the Manywar because he wanted to try and redeem Denth. He thought a reconciliation between Denth and Vasher was possible with his help; instead, he was killed by Vasher. Denth brought him back as a Lifeless because he knew Arsteel could continue to contribute to the crew by means of his excellent combat skills.[2] As a Lifeless, Arsteel goes by the name Clod. Jewels originally joined the crew because she was in love with Arsteel (she still is). It isn’t clear how Denth and Tonk Fah first joined forces.

Prior to Vivenna's integration into the group, the crew had been hired by Bluefingers for the task of increasing tensions between Hallandren and Idris to drive Hallandren to war.[3][4] Early on, Denth manages to get employment with Lemex to use as an in with the Idrian community in Hallandren. When word comes that Vivenna is on her way, however, Denth realizes that she could be a backup pawn for their overall plan and begins poisoning Lemex so that they can gain control of and use Vivenna when she arrives.[5]

Upon her arrival in Hallandren, the crew ingratiates themselves to Vivenna, doing a thorough job of manipulating her into thinking that due to Lemex’s demise she is now their employer.[6] While Vivenna believes the crew is helping her to help her people, they actually use her as a symbol to inflame the local Idrian population against the Hallandren leadership and to show the Hallendrens that the Idrians are worth going to war against. First, they discuss and employ such tactics as disrupting the food supply to the city and inciting revolts in the dye fields. They meet with merchants, crime lords, and politicians, using Vivenna’s Royal Locks as proof of her identity.[7] Vivenna is allowed to be present when they attack a salt merchant’s shop, which is only a cover for the crew’s true motive: kidnapping the daughter of Nanrovah, high priest of Stillmark, to blackmail him into changing his vote at court to one for war.[8] It is only after her brief kidnapping by Vasher that Vivenna discovers, upon her return, the crew's actual intentions.[9] She escapes the crew and is eventually rescued again by Vasher, together with whom she does what she can to counter what the crew has been doing.

After Denth's death at Vasher’s hands, the crew splits up. Jewels leaves to take the Lifeless Arsteel to his brother Yesteel, master of Lifeless Commands, in the hope that he can find a way to restore Arsteel's memories and personality. Tonk Fah, free from the direction and control that Denth provided for his murderous urges, goes off to begin killing wantonly.[10]
