The Shattering of Adonalsium (or simply, the Shattering) was a pivotal moment in the history of the cosmere. Prior to this, there were no Shards, which have been the dominant influence in the cosmere we've seen so far. Hoid was there at the Shattering[citation needed], though it is not clear if he caused the Shattering or was an observer.

Prior to the Shattering

It is not clear how different the cosmere was prior to the Shattering. However, Brandon has stated that in the Dragonsteel series, we will see what magic looks like before the Shattering[citation needed].
