Brandon always planned for the Alcatraz series to consist of five books, Scholastic, the original publisher, however, only bought the first four. For a variety of reasons, including Scholastic being unwilling to make a contract for the fifth book, Brandon bought back the rights in early 2013.[1] He later re-sold the series, including book 5, to Tor.[4]

Following a month of research for The Aztlanian, Brandon spent June 2014 writing the first draft of Alcatraz 5.[5]
