Sarene was the daughter of King Eventeo of Teod[1] and Queen of Arelon. She had one brother, who was the heir to the Teoish throne.[2]
Appearance
Sarene is described as being unusually tall for a woman, as well as thin. This leads to her father nicknaming her [[Leky_stick|Leky Stick].]She has fair hair and is presumably well muscled, due to her affinity for fencing.
Personality
Sarene, as princess of Teod, is very politically savvy, and not afraid of using any means to get what she wants. This is shown by how she is willing to act like an idiot in order to manipulate King Iadon[3]. She is known for being very clever, so much so that no potential suitors besides Raoden ever approached her, in fear of living with a woman smarter than them. This, along with the accidental alienation of the majority of women at home, has left her feeling like an outcast. By the end of the book, however, she overcomes this feeling.
She is also known as being brusque and occasionally sarcastic and patronizing to those who underestimate or try to manipulate her. She is a natural leader, as evidenced by her immediate taking over of Raoden's revolutionary group, despite strong personalities such as Roial and Ahan. She is never satisfied with an unsolved mystery, and will allow herself to be sidetracked by unraveling them. Not only that, but she can detect quite well whens he is being lied to, and is very rarely wrong.
She seeks to better the lives of others, such as when she brings food to the Elantrians[4], works to overthrow King Iadon's system of government[5], and works with the women of Arelon to improve their status in society.[6]
History
She spent several years working as an ambassador for Teod, serving most notably as the ambassador to Svorden.
In an attempt to re-establish diplomatic relations with Arelon, Sarene set up an arranged marriage with Prince Raoden. She had communicated with Raoden through letters and Seon. One of the clauses in the engagement contract specified that should either Sarene or Raoden die before they were married the marriage would be considered to have been carried out and still binding, and since Raoden was considered legally dead after his transformation Sarene became "married" to a dead man, and became King Iadon's daughter and the princess of Arelon by law.
She spent the first three months of her "married" life working to block the efforts of Hrathen to convert the people to Shu-Dereth and attempting to fix the problems with Iadon's rule over Arelon. She taught a group of Arelish noble ladies, including Eshen and Daora, fencing during this time.
She had arranged to marry Duke Roial for a political alliance in order to make him king of Arelon instead of his competitor, Duke Telrii. However, she had been affected by a substance which Hrathen had arranged to be given to her. The substance gave her the outward appearance of an Elantrian, and she was banished to Elantris just as she should have been married to Roial. After five days in Elantris, she and Raoden figured out that she was not truly an Elantrian, and she returned to Kae.
When the Derethi priests attacked Arelon, she was captured along with the rest of her allies and family in Kae, and she was taken to Teoin by Dilaf, where he tried to use her to make King Eventeo surrender to the Derethi. With the aid of Hrathen, Raoden, Galladon, and many other Elantrians, she fought off the Derethi invasion and saved both Kae and Teod from Dilaf's attack.
Afterward, she was married in a grand ceremony to Raoden, and became the Queen of Arelon.
