The Returned retained no memory of their previous existence and are worshipped as gods in Hallandren. The exact process of a Returned's resurrection is unclear; however, Lightsong had a Voice speak to him, offering him to Return and change the events of his vision. This voice is confirmed to be the Shard Endowment.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; refs with no name must have content

Breath

Each Returned was gifted with a single, powerful Breath which allows them to reach the Fifth Heightening. This divine Breath was a Splinter of Endowment.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; refs with no name must have content A Returned may give this Breath (sacrificing himself) to heal one person.

A Returned consumeed one Breath per week as a consequence of being reborn. Their body fed off of any Breaths they had available, including their divine Breath, and die if there is no breaths to feed on.

Returned could, however, receive more Breaths on top of their divine Breath. They could then use these Breaths for normal Awakening purposes.[1]

Appearance

Returned were able to modify their appearance to suit how they think they should look. The old gods looked old and the heroic gods looked strong, as examples.[2] Their appearance depended on how they perceive themselves. However, common traits included being larger than normal humans and giving off a color-altering aura.

A Returned was able to suppress their divine Breath, altering their appearance to be more normal.[3] However, a normal-looking Returned still had increased strength and speed, immunity to disease, and agelessness.[citation needed]

Religion

In Hallandren the Returned were worshiped as gods sent by the Iridescent Tones to guide their followers. As such the Returned were fed one Breath each week in order to maintain their life. In exchange the Returned were petitioned by the people of the city to give up their breath as a cure for illnesses.[citation needed] They were also expected to perform auguries by reviewing works of art sent by citizens.[citation needed]
