Come on, friend. Let's get you back to the gates and see if there's a shelter that's still taking people in for the night.

—Fran to Vasher[1]

Fran is an unarmed guard at Mercystar's palace on Nalthis. He wears yellow and gold to identify himself as part of Mercystar's staff, and he is tasked with keeping people out during the evening.[1]

He and Gagaril were on duty when Vasher broke in. They were unconcerned to see a seemingly mad man wander in, and they offered to take Vasher to see if they could find a shelter to take him for the night. Despite their kindness, Vasher took them by surprise and knocked Fran out by sending him to the floor and stepping on his neck.[1] When Lightsong later interviewed him and Gagaril about the disturbance, Fran had developed bruises on his stomach and neck from Vasher's attack. He was able to describe both Vasher's and Nightblood's appearance to Lightsong when questioned.[2]
