The Way of Kings epigraphs come from several different sources:

- The Part Two epigraphs form a letter from Hoid to Frost.
- The Part Three epigraphs are excerpts from Jasnah Kholin's notebook.
- The Part Four epigraphs are Death Rattles collected by the Silent Gatherers.
- Part Five has no epigraphs
Words of Radiance
The Words of Radiance epigraphs come from several different sources:
- The Part One epigraphs are excerpts from Navani Kholin's journal.
- The Part Two epigraphs are verses from several listener songs.
- The Part Three epigraphs are excerpts from the in-world book Words of Radiance, which describes the Knights Radiant and their powers.
- The Part Four epigraphs form a reply from Frost to Hoid in response to the letter from The Way of Kings Part Two epigraphs.
- The Part Five epigraphs are excerpts from Taravangian's Diagram.
Oathbringer
The Oathbringer epigraphs come from several different sources:
- The Part One epigraphs are excerpts from the preface to the in-world Oathbringer, the book Dalinar Kholin writes after the Battle of Thaylen Field.
- The Part Two epigraphs are letters from the Shards Endowment (chapters 33-41), Autonomy (via its avatar Patji; chapters 42-51), and Harmony (chapters 53-57) to Hoid, likely in response to a letter similar to the one he sent Frost.
- The Part Three epigraphs are messages recorded by the Knights Radiant just prior to the abandonment of Urithiru and the Recreance, found in the Urithiru gem archive.
- The Part Four epigraphs are excerpts from the in-world book by Hessi, Mythica, which attempts to catalogue the Unmade.
- The Part Five epigraphs are excerpts from the Eila Stele, a document written by a singer around the time of the first Desolation (chapters 115-118), and from the postscript to the in-world Way of Kings (chapters 119-122) - the book written by Nohadon about his journeys.
Rhythm of War
The Rhythm of War epigraphs come from several different sources:
- The Part One epigraphs are a transcript of a lecture on fabrial mechanics presented to the coalition of monarchs by Navani Kholin.
- The Part Two epigraphs is a letter from the Shard Harmony to Hoid, continuing their earlier correspondence.
- The Part Three epigraphs are excerpts from the in-world Rhythm of War, describing the research of Navani Kholin and Raboniel on the nature of Light.
- The Part Four epigraphs are excerpts from Kalak's journal, reflecting on his nature as a Herald.
- The Part Five epigraphs are excerpts from the musings of El, a Fused scholar of human art forms, on the first of the Final Ten Days..
