Seala is a young Arelish[2] woman from Sel and the former wife of Dilaf.[1]
History
Dilaf, a Derethi gragdet from Fjorden, was at some point physically transformed to look like a young Arelish man using the magic of Dakhor.[1] His intent was to infiltrate Arelon,Template:Annotation ref which is the only remaining nation in Opelon not under Fjordell control.[3] Seala meets Dilaf after his transformation; despite his own distaste for his new body, she finds him incredibly handsome.[1] Dilaf sets aside his aversion to Aonic people and they are eventually married.Template:Annotation ref
Ten years prior to the Reod, Seala falls ill with a serious palsy,[4] and Dilaf grudgingly takes her to Elantris to be healed despite his distrust of their magic.[1] An Elantrian uses Aon Ien to heal her, but the symbol is drawn incorrectly and it flashes and malfunctions, leaving her 'cursed'.[4] Her hair falls out, her skin turns black, and she experiences incredible amounts of pain that never subside, similar to fallen Elantrians after the Reod.[4][1] Eventually, the pain is so intense that she effectively becomes HoedTemplate:Annotation ref and commits suicide by jumping from Elantris' walls.[4][1] Dilaf finds her still alive and screaming, and he burns her broken body.[1] He regrets ever bringing Seala to the Elantrians and wishes they would have let her die.[1]
Legacy
Seala's death fuels Dilaf's intense hatred of ElantriansTemplate:Annotation ref and causes him to become mentally unstable.Template:Annotation ref Dilaf believes that the unnamed Elantrian healer knew of his origins and intentionally botched the Aon,[1] but this is not confirmed.[5] He sees the invasion of Arelon as vengeance for Seala.[6]
Raoden learns of Seala's case in a book about unusual occurrences with AonDor.[7][4] Her case gives him some clues about the nature of fallen Elantrians and the corruption of their magic.[4]
