The Liar of Partinel is an unpublished cosmere work that Brandon Sanderson wrote in 2007.[1]

It is set on the world of Yolen and features a character called Midius who takes on the name of his master, Hoid. The original plan was for it to be part of Dragonsteel, but published as if a standalone book to avoid confusion with the main Dragonsteel sequence.[2]

While Sanderson has stated multiple times that he will rewrite and publish Hoid's origin story at some point, his first attempt did not feel right, and "every chapter was a chore to write."[3] He does not distribute this book because the personality of the main character "never clicked," and he does not want it to color fans' predispositions towards that character.[4] A draft of the first six chapters was posted on Brandon's website for public comment here; however, he discourages fans from seeking it out.

The main character performs Lightweaving, a common form of investiture in the Cosmere. The Ars Arcanum of Words of Radiance claims that Roshar's Lightweaving is the most similar to this "original Yolish variant."
