Aviar are a class of bird on First of the Sun native to the Pantheon archipelago.[1] Aviar is a term the Eelakin use for any bird that has magical powers and is capable of sharing those powers with humans.

Source of Powers

These birds have gained magical powers on account of consuming worms native to the islands while very young. In particular, the worms feed off the fruits fallen from the Patji's Fingers that grow next to Patji's Eye.[citation needed] Aviar birds raised outside the Pantheon usually do not develop these unique powers. Sixth of the Dusk raised a non-native bird on the isles, Sak, and found that she also developed powers.

Powers

The power obtained is different for each species of bird. There are Physical, Cognitive, and Spiritual powers.[2] For example, Kokerlii has the Cognitive ability to conceal his mind and those of others around him from beasts that hunt by seeking out minds. Aviar are able to share these powers with humans through a Spiritual Connection similar to the Nahel bond. Their bond is not as powerful as the Nahel bond, but because of that it can be shifted between people at its owner's will.[3] It has been hinted at that there are many other magical properties that were not mentioned. The magical abilities/species of birds has been well documented by the Mainlanders and there has not been a new type of Aviar discovered for over 100 years.[citation needed]

Examples of Aviar

Kokerlii
Sixth of the Dusk's Cognitive disguise Aviar. He has the ability to conceal his mind and those of others around him from beasts that hunt by seeking out minds, which is similar to Allomantic copper.[4]
Mirris
Vathi's Cognitive disguise Aviar. He has the ability to conceal his mind and those of others around him from beasts that hunt by seeking out minds.
Sisisru
One of the Aviar Dusk is raising.
Sak
A non-native bird raised on the isles. She has the Spiritual power to show people places they might die. These warnings manifest as illusions of their dead bodies. This is similar to Allomantic electrum.[4]

Trivia

  • Eating an Aviar would not grant a person their powers.[5]
  • A kandra in the form of an Aviar would not be able to gain their powers, even if they ate the worms.[6]
