The City of Elantris is a city in Arelon on the continent of Opelon on Sel. Prior to the Reod and following the Invasion of Arelon it served as the Capital of Arelon. It is surrounded by four Gate Cities in each of the cardinal directions, of which Kae is one.

After the Reod those Seons whose masters where taken by the Shaod would become mindless, floating aimlessly around Elantris. This is the result of the Spiritual nature of the bond between a Seon and its master. The "incomplete" Shaod intereferes with the master's spiritual aspect which interferes with the nature of their Seon. In some instances they would respond to certain motions by rote, such as landing in a person's hand when they held it out, but there was no other sign of recognition. At this time the Aons at their cores appeared "patchy and incomplete" with parts being dark, like the splotches on the Elantrians' skin.
Ten years prior to the events of the novel Elantris a large earthquake occurred in the south of Arelon causing a significant crack in the ground, later refered to as the Chasm. This caused an event that came to be called the Reod from Aon Reo which means punishment and retribution. The Chasm signified a large enough change in the geography of Arelon that the Aons used across Elantris, including the massive Aon Rao the Elantrian Metropolitan Area formed, became incomplete. Elantris, and the Elantrians that called it home, "fell" because of this. The city, which had glowed with an inner light, grew dark and a greasy slime started to cover every surface. The Elantrians themselves were likewise diminished. Their silvery skin turned grey and was covered in dark splotches and their brilliant white hair began to fall out among other, less readily apparent, changes such as their hearts ceasing to beat and their wounds refusing to heal. The strongest and most powerful Elantrians were also placed under extreme pressure from the Dor which ached for release, leaving them effectively immobilized.

The fall of Elantris had a profound effect on the rest of Arelon as well. The Elantrains and their use of AonDor had served as the lynchpin of the Arelish economy for centuries. Their ability to create large amounts of food, cheaply, had supported massive urban populations. It's sudden absence, along with several other factors, caused a destabilization of Arelish society prompting an uprising against their former leaders. The majority of the Elantrians were killed by their former servants. Iadon came to power and eventually became King. He moved most of the population to plantations leaving Kae, the new capital, as the only occupied Gate City. Elantris itself was placed under quarantine; those taken by the Shaod were forced to relocate to the city and no one was permitted to leave. The only food that entered the city was a small pouch given to each Elantrian as they entered, which was part of the funereal practices of Shu-Korath.

Inside Elantris conditions continued to deteriorate. Elantris had been constructed using AonDor, and without the Dor sustaining it the city began to decay; the stones themselves started to rot. Since the Elantrians could no longer heal and could not die from their wounds or starvation, the pain they felt from each injury eventually grew to the point where it drove them mad, forcing them to retreat deep inside themselves. Afterwards their only interaction with the outside was a phrase, unique to each person, that they would repeat over and over again as if in a daze. The Elantrians came to be known as the Hoed.

Some Elantrians who had not yet succumbed and become Hoed formed gangs which would steal the funeral offerings of food from new entrants to the city in an effort to satiate their ravenous hunger. At a point ten years following the Reod there were three gangs, led by Karata, Aanden, and Shaor. Karata's gang resided in the Royal Palace and cared for the children residing to the city. Aanden and his followers took residence in the Library, and used the bindings of its books as a food source. Shaor, who was in reality a child, was worshiped by her followers, who had degenerated into a sub-human society, as a result of the wig that gave the impression of her retaining her hair when all other Elantrians had lost theirs. Shaor's base of power was the bank

New Elantris
Ten years after the Reod, Raoden, the Crown Prince of Arelon, was taken by the Shaod and secretly exiled to Elantris. Under the pseudonym "Spirit" he acquired a number of followers while attempting to improve conditions in the City. He and his followers settled in the area around what had once been a Korathi church, and cleaned every surface, even the streets, of the ever-present slime. This resettlement eventually came to be known as "New Elantris". Overtime he was able to gain the support of both Karata and Aanden, who returned to his original name of Taan, and most of their supporters. He and his followers also made an effort to collect the Hoed from the streets and alleyways and begin to care for them.

The resettlement was supported in part by the Widow's Trial of Sarene, Raoden's "widow", which supplied the city with much needed food and supplies. Due to her initial distrust of "Spirit" she attempted to thwart his plans by obeying the letter but not the spirit of his requests. This forced the Elantrians to be creative with the materials and contributed to the unique culture of New Elantris, such as the garish clothing prompted by Sarene's choice of fabric colors.

Around this time Raoden, along with Galladon and Karata, discovered that some of the Hoed are Elantrians from before the fall. They are shocked because it was believed they had all died in the chaos following the Reod. One of these Hoed leads them to a hidden library containing books on AonDor, among other subjects, as well as a passage to the Lake, where Elantrians went to die. In this library Raoden gained an understanding of certain aspects of the fall. The slime, for example, was a result of the decomposing of a micro-organism that had thrived on the light given off by the city, when it grew dark the organisms died. He also discovered the tie between AonDor and the geography of Arelon, and was able to "fix" AonDor by the addition of the Chasm line to the Aons.

The Restoration of Elantris
During the events of the Invasion of Arelon Raoden is critically injured and becomes one of the Hoed. Galladon and Karata, following a promise they had made to Raoden, brought him to the Lake in order to ease his suffering. On the way he noticed that Elantris was itself was a broken Aon. After refusing the peace offered by the Lake he added the Chasm line while avoiding capture by Dakhor monks, Karata died protecting him. Once the Chasm line wass added Elantris, and the Elantrians were restored to their pre-Reod state.

Following Raoden's coronation Elantris wass re-instated as the Arelish capital.

{!{Magical Entities |apperance= glowing, floating spheres with Aons at their core |abilities= "actualizing" their aon [fn 1] |magic= AonDor, Splinters of Devotion |world= Sel |books= Elantris }}

To a Seon, there is no above or beneath, there are only those we love. And we serve those we love.

Seons are a type of magical entity native to Sel. They have the appearance of floating balls of light, with a glowing Aon at their core. These Aons are Splinters of the Shard Devotion.[2] Seons are named for the Aon at their heart. The word "Seon" comes from Aon Seo, which means loyalty and service.

Each Seon is bound to a person to whom they act as an adviser and caretaker. The bond can be Passed from one person to another, usually to a family member. This bond is similar in nature to the Nahel Bond between spren and Surgebinders.[3]

History[edit]

Origin[edit]

The exact circumstances of the Seons' creation are currently unknown. What is known is that there were no Seons when the Shard Odium visited Sel.[4] As well as the fact that the Splintering of Devotion and Dominion, by Odium, is contemporaneous with the creation of the Seons.[5]

The Reod[edit]

After the Reod those Seons whose masters where taken by the Shaod would become mindless, floating aimlessly around Elantris. This is the result of the Spiritual nature of the bond between a Seon and its master. The "incomplete" Shaod intereferes with the master's spiritual aspect which interferes with the nature of their Seon.[6] In some instances they would respond to certain motions by rote, such as landing in a person's hand when they held it out, but there was no other sign of recognition. At this time the Aons at their cores appeared "patchy and incomplete" with parts being dark, like the splotches on the Elantrians' skin.

After Elantris and the Elantrians were restored the Seons were "healed" as well, although they could not remember the time they spent mindless.

Trivia[edit]

 • It is planned for the Elantris sequel to have more of a focus on the Seons, such as where they come from and where they are disappearing to. Brandon has also mentioned the possiblity of having a Seon as one of the viewpoint characters.[7]
 • The Skaze, who are associated with the Shard Dominion, are the counterparts to the Seons. Brandon has referred to them as "evil seons".[8]
