Masaka, also known as Chinikdakordich, is a young Sleepless who assumes the role of a female nightmare painter on Komashi.

Appearance and Personality

Masaka is a short woman who wears her hair with bangs and tends to wear dark makeup on her face, especially around the eyes.[1] She exclusively wears black clothing, and favors a black sweater.[2] She dislikes showing their skin, to avoid revealing her nature as a Sleepless to others--she wears scarves or tops with a high collar in order to hide her neck, and sometimes wear sleeves long enough to pull her hands into them.[1][2]

Masaka is usually very quiet, even with her friends.[1] She dislikes when people stare at her, and show other signs of antisocial behavior.[1] Despite her strange personality, Masaka makes an effort to be friendly to people she likes.[1] Her odd behavior is likely a consequence of her limited experience being a human.[2] Masaka is very adamantly tired of war,[2] and tries to influence her friends toward being accepting of aliens.[3] She also thinks nightmares can sometimes be cute, though she insists she dislikes horrific creatures.[4] Masaka often draws on her sketchpad while hanging out with friends.[1] As one can assume from the career she choose, she enjoys painting, and art in general.[1][2]

She takes on the form of a human woman not just out of convenience, but due to actually finding happiness in that form and being perceived as such.[2] She actively prefers the name Makasa to her Sleepless name.[2]

Attributes and Abilities

As a Sleepless, Masaka is able to send out hordelings away from herself to search and spy, though she does not do this regularly.[2] Masaka is also a competent painter, having completed two years of upper school on the subject before being hired.[1]

History

Masaka previously used the name Chinikdakordich, and is the sixthieth horde of the Natricatich strain of Sleepless. She doesn't talk much about their past, but experienced a great deal of prejudice due to being a Sleepless. At some point she grew tired of wars being fought elsewhere in the cosmere and so decided to disguise herself and live a normal human life. After years of breeding she was able to produce a convincing face, and took up residence on Kilahito.[2] When she arrived on Kilahito, she sent out hordelings to investigate her surroundings. She found circular regions which she could not enter, and avoided searching them further.[1]

In upper school on Komashi, Masaka was rumored to have stabbed someone years prior, and been sent to become a painter by a court as part of her plea deal.[1] During their schooling she became friends with Nikaro, Akane, Tojin, and Izzy.[1] She once made a hat for Nikaro, for his birthday.[5] She became a painter after graduating and typically work alongside Izzy.[3]

When Yumi first arrived in Kilahito, Masaka drew a strange bunny for her as a gift.[1] Later, Design recruited Masaka to help Yumi map out the planet beyond the shroud. Masaka was readily willing to help once she understood the issue was important, though she begged Yumi not to tell anyone about her nature and offered a knife as a gift when Yumi promised not to tell. Masaka was able to map out the locations of the circular areas in the shroud where they were unable to enter.[2]

When Nikaro begged his friends to join him in defense of Kilahito, Masaka was the second of his friends (following Tojin) to agree that they should help.[6] At the battle of Kilahito, Masaka was the first to notice the arrival of the stable nightmares.[7] After Hoid and Design left Komashi, Masaka wrote letters to the Cryptic periodically with updates. Hoid was able to learn more about Komashi's fate, following the destruction of the father machine, through this information. With the Nightmare Division disbanded, Masaka got a job as a server at the Noodle Princess, working for Painter and Yumi. According to Hoid, she became increasingly comfortable with more people knowing about her nature.[8]
