Samjae is a Torish yoki-hijo who befriends Yumi when the two are young girls, still in training.[2]

Though forbidden by Liyun, Samjae would secretly tell Yumi stories of yoki-hijo falling in love and running away.[3][4] The two were eventually separated by Liyun, who considered their growing attachment to be detrimental.[2] Following the activation of the machine, Samjae and the other thirteen yoki-hijo were unknowingly held in captivity.[5]
