After the arrival of the [[Everstorm]] and the start of the [[True Desolation]] the remaining Listeners left Narak, roaming around on the Shattered plains.

Listener soldiers use Warform, this grants them strong carapace armor as well as increased strength.{{book ref|sa2|i|1}} Though not as strong or resilient as someone with Shardplate, warform listeners were a real threat to regular human soldiers. The Listener military is commanded by a general, who is also the warform representative in the [[Council of Five]]. During the [[War of Reckoning]] Eshonai served as general.

Unlike the Alethi, the listeners had a single unified army. Their society was governed by the [[Council of Five]], whose members each represented one of the five [[Singer#Forms|singer forms]] that the listeners used. The Council member who used [[warform]], which is the singer form used by listener warriors, served as the general of the army.{{book ref|sa2|i|4}}

At some point during the war, Eshonai became the warform member among the Five and started leading the fight for survival against the Alethi. She also possessed the listeners' only remaining set of Shardblade and Shardplate, and used these in addition to warform during battle.{{book ref|sa1|68}}{{book ref|sa2|i|4}}


While they also used archers just like the Alethi, the listeners' combat strategy also involved using '''warpairs'''{{book ref|sa1|26}}, or pairs of warriors who fought side by side as partners. Raw gemstones in beard. Soldiers wear simple garments tailored around their warform carapace. Long Coates, but not for battle. Generals wear caps/helmets on their skullplates and tight red cloths. Some singers hate trapping spren, instead preferring going out into the highstorms and attracting the proper spren. Measure time by the rhythms, movements and half movements. They live in huts made from hardened crem over frames of shell, which are huddled on the leeward side of lumps of stone. During the war of reckoning many listeners no longer cared about their origins. Forms couldn’t be commanded, everyone was free to choose. The listeners make paper from plants native to the unclaimed hills and shattered plains, this paper is much rougher and varies in Color. Their paper is textured and full instead of meat and sterile.{{book ref|WoR|i|4}} When a highstorm is close the people prepare their homes, this includes stuffing rags under their doors, shoving bracing boards into position and pounding large wooden blocks into their open windows.

The listeners learned how to capture spren in gemstones by watching humans, then working out the process for themselves. This allowed them to change forms much more reliably. Before the [[Reod]] the capital city of Arelon was Elantris, the magical shining city home to the Elantrians who ruled the nation. After the fall of Elantris the nearby city of [[Kae]] became the capital for a short period of ten years and then after the invasion of Arelon, and the reconstruction of Elantris, New Elantris became the new capital.

Before the Reod, Arelon was ruled by the Elantrians as a theocratic nation{{book ref|Elantris|7}}. They were worshipped as deities by virtue of their magical abilities. Although the Elantrians were regarded as gods by many of the citizenry, other religions existed and were not contested by the Elantrians.{{book ref|Elantris|46}}

After the collapse of Elantris due to the Reod, the wealthiest and most powerful merchants rose up and seized control of the nation.{{book ref|Elantris|6}} The merchants then became the new nobility, the capital city moved from Elantris to one of the surrounding towns, [[Kae]], and the head of the merchants guild [[Iadon]] was crowned as king, the new government ruled that someones nobility was directly tied to their wealth, which lead to the reinstatement of a form of slavery of the peasant class as all the nobles struggled to gain more wealth and so rise in rank.{{book ref|Elantris|8}} In addition to barons, counts, and dukes,{{book ref|elantris|11}} the system also had lesser titles like Kimeon (and its feminine version, Kimess) and Tore.{{glossary ref|Elantris|K}}{{glossary ref|Elantris|T}}{{ref|text=These titles are found only in the ''Elantris'' glossary from [[Brandon Sanderson|Brandon's]] website.}} This system of government was incredibly unstable and it is believed that even without the [[invasion of Arelon]] the government would soon have collapsed.

== Invested Art ==
Some people of [[Aonic]] heritage, residing in Arelon would be struck by a phenomenon known as the [[Shaod]] and would gain the ability to draw [[Aon]]s, which when drawn correctly, could produce a magical effect. These symbols were strongest when used close to the city of Elantris and inside of Arelons borders. Each Aon also resembled some of the landscape of Arelon. The central Aon that was required to draw all others was a basic map of Arelon itself.{{book ref|Elantris|46}}
