Haspers are a form of mollusk on Roshar.[1] A stranna hasper refers to a variety of the mollusk that can be cooked and eaten.[2]

Appearance and Behavior

Haspers are comprised of two shells[3] that enclose a slimy interior.[4] These two shells open and close in rhythm with one another.[1] Due to this motion, haspers are often compared to tiny mouths that are breathing. At least some varieties of haspers have pearly shells.[1] They may be related to tiny snails.[3]

Haspers are creatures that appear to spend most, if not all, of their life totally stationary.[3][5] They grow in clusters,[3] attached to the side of objects made of stone,[6] wood,[7] or on shalebark.[1] A cluster of haspers can support the weight of a few waterskins.[5]

Haspers can be found in a wide variety of places across eastern Roshar, including the docks of Kharbranth,[7] Hearthstone,[3] and the chasms of the Shattered Plains.[8] They reproduce during the Weeping, with clusters seeming to grow out of nowhere.[3] It is unknown what haspers feed on.[7]

Culinary Use

Adolin included steamed stranna haspers in a platter of food that he brought to Shallan's quarters in Urithiru after training her in the use of a Shardblade.[2]

Eshonai ate a meal of steamed haspers just before discovering the humans.[9]
