Vasher invented the Phantoms{{annotation ref|book=wb|chapter=58}} around three hundred years ago.{{book ref|wb|58}} During this period, Awakening was still a relatively new concept and the [[Five Scholars]] were regularly making significant breakthroughs that contributed to the beginning of the [[Manywar]].{{book ref|wb|32}} Discoveries by [[Yesteel]] and [[Shashara]] led to nations building up huge fighting forces made of both humans and Lifeless.{{book ref|wb|32}} However, Vasher's Phantoms were so powerful that they could destroy larger armies while sustaining almost no losses.{{annotationwob ref|text=Warbreaker epilogue|link=annotation-warbreaker-epilogue7479}}

After [[Bluefingers]] betrays Hallandren and co-opts an army of Lifeless, Vasher reveals his true nature to [[Siri]], [[Vivenna]], and [[Susebron]].{{book ref|wb|58}} He tells them that at least one thousand of the oldest D'Denir are actually his Phantoms, and gives them his security phrase.{{book ref|wb|58}} As [[God King]], Susebron has over fifty thousand Breaths{{book ref|wb|55}} and is therefore able to reanimate all of the Phantoms; he then sends them to stop the Lifeless army from marching on Idris.{{book ref|wb|epilogue}} The Phantoms easily destroy the army, and they remain in Siri and Susebron's control.{{annotationwob ref|text=Warbreaker epilogue|link=annotation-warbreaker-epilogue7479}} Vasher is left feeling cynical about reactivating a weapon like the Phantoms.{{book ref|wb|epilogue}}
