Prior to his usage of 'Hoid' as an alias 'Cephandius' was the most popular identity that Hoid worked under, while not his true name it is only a few decades off and closer to his 'real' self.{{wob ref|3985}}{{wob ref|10313}} This is one of his oldest and longest running identities, notably it is the one that the original vessels knew him under.{{wob ref|3985}}{{msh ref|2|1}}{{epigraph ref|sa3|33}}{{epigraph ref|sa3|42}}{{book ref|sa4|112}} Prior to his adoption of this identity however was that of 'Topaz'{{wob ref|6065}} and with it the title of 'Bearer of the First Gem.'{{wob ref|13128}}{{wob ref|5301}}{{wob ref|14355}} Those involved in the Shattering also were aware of this term but use it infrequently, it was a nickname based of the Dawnshard that Hoid used to wield. === Well of Ascension Retcon ===
=== WoA Retcon ===

Hoid had presumed that the Well of Ascenion was located in the northern mountains like Vin but was mistaken in this regard. He spent most of his time trying to locate the Well up North.{{wob ref|5981}} [Contradicts his arrival to the system???] Hoid overheard Vin speak about the Well and raced back to the city and spent him time skulking around there for the moment, he eventually managed to get into the Well.{{wob ref|5981}}
As part of the interconnectedness of the Cosmere and the nature of Hoid's story being told in glimpses of his actions in various novels aspects of his story has had to be altered or retconned as the novels were released. One notable case of this can be seen in the changing story of Hoid's visit to Scadrial during the [whatever it's called].

Vin got to the well first and so Hoid intended to leave Scadrial but got sidetracked.{{wob ref|1220}}
In the original continuity Hoid had presumed that the Well of Ascension was located in the northern mountains like Vin but was mistaken in this regard, most of his visit to Scadrial was to be devoted to this doomed quest.{{wob ref|5981}} In a deleted scene Vin was meant to notice footprints that he had left after having just left the well.{{wob ref|1552}} Following this failure he then became involved in events he did not attend to, most likely the Terris, before eventually overhearing Vin, Elend and Spook realise that the Well was located back in Luthadel. Following this he was to race back to the city before finally finding his way into the Well and finally gaining Lerasium there.{{wob ref|5981}}{{wob ref|5942}}{{wob ref|1220}}

Hoid has no interest in holding the power within the well in the form that it was in.{{wob ref|4096}}
This continuity had to be adandoned for two reasons; firstly the Vin's trip to the Well was cut short in the final version as Sanderson found it too much of a momentum killer to the story, secondly whilst writing [[Secret History]] it was realised that with the destruction of Ruin's perpendicularity Hoid could only have used the Well of Ascension to gain access to the physical realm. Due to this his entire quest was now moot. Now instead in the new continuity Hoid instead spent the extra time visiting the Terris as was described above in the history section. This change has not altered anything else in the world however some word of Brandons about the previous continuity are now obsolete.{{wob ref|1552}}

Hoid got distracted during the events of the Well of Ascension.{{wob ref|5942}}
